So, the first step is looking at the schools you are interested in, and checking their accreditation.  There are two types of college accreditation, regional accreditation and national.  Regional accreditation is the most important, as regional accredited schools are recognized by all employers, and their credits are transferable from school to school.  So if you find that you don’t like this school as much as you thought you would, from a regional accredited school you can transfer your course credits to a new school.

Now after you have a list of schools that interest you, with regional accreditation, you can move on to the next step.  Here you want to compare all the important factors.  Cost being a major one, think about how much the schools cost, because this student debt will take you some time to pay off.  Now you want to look at student population and student teacher ratio.  Schools with fewer students are usually more desirable, as are schools with a higher number of teachers compared to students.

Also make sure to look at the school’s graduation rate and how many credits are necessary to earn either an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.  You want a school with a higher graduation rate, and with an acceptable amount of credits required.  The more credit’s a school requires, the longer it will take you to earn them, or the more money they will cost.  So take that into account when picking an online college.

Now you should have a fine tuned idea of which schools interest you the most.  From here you should get into contact with a school representative and discuss your interest.  Contact all the schools you’re interested in, and make sure you don’t make a decision until after you’ve voiced your questions and concerns to every school individually.

What Internet Will Be Like in 2010 http://itlist.com/what-internet-will-be-like-in-2010/ http://itlist.com/what-internet-will-be-like-in-2010/#comments Fri, 17 Aug 2012 10:39:51 +0000 IT List http://itlist.com/?p=1024 The first and eventful decade of the 21st century has come to an end. And in this decade not only we have recovered from the dotcom bust, but we have also marched ahead to add expert layer to the web (web 3.0).

What changed in the 1st decade?

  • In the decade that is passing by, Blogging, video sharing, pod casting, and rich media content has come huge.
  • Web which was nothing but a cheap imitation of broadcast media in the beginning of the decade has changed, and now it is more of a conversational media.
  • Top-down approach of communication of web 1.0 (web in the beginning of 2000) gave way to two way communication.
  • Comments and feedback become a huge force on the Internet.
  • People became social.
  • Friendster went out and got replaced by Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn.
  • People felt the power of 140 characters as twitter, plurk, identi.ca, and like flourished.
  • Sharing has become a new nature
  • People started voicing their concern with click of a mouse.
  • Broadband become ubiquitous.
  • Computer is not only medium for web access. More and more people started using handheld devices to access the net.
  • Techcrunch, lifehacker, boingboing, and the likes become more popular on the net then AOL, Times and other biggies.
  • Being on the first page of Digg has become cooler than being on the top 10 list of the New York Times.
  • Social bookmarking became a huge force.
  • Search engine became more intelligent.
  • Cloud computing is a serious business now.

This is in no way a complete list of what has changed in the first decade of the twenty-first century.

What to expect in 2010

  • Authority will rule.
  • People with real knowledge about their field will become more important.
  • Web will go semantic
  • Search engines will become more intolerant of shoddy SEO practices
  • Web will become personal and portable
  • Big content sites like ehow, about.com will become prominent.
  • Broadband will become more popular.
  • You will be more important as an individual than as member of tribe.
  • Technology will go open source.
  • Chrome OS will see the light of the day.
  • Wolfram Alpha will become a default search engine for hard data.
  • Bing will put a big dent in Google search.
  • More and more SEO will happen for Bing.
  • Search result will become more personal and local

These and several other changes will happen in 2010. Let’s wait and see how it unfolds, but for now let’s bid adieu to 2009. Bye, Bye 2009!

How to get a Proper Feedback for Anything Under the Sun http://itlist.com/how-to-get-a-proper-feedback-for-anything-under-the-sun/ http://itlist.com/how-to-get-a-proper-feedback-for-anything-under-the-sun/#comments Fri, 17 Aug 2012 10:37:55 +0000 IT List http://itlist.com/?p=1021 A feedback is important. It plays a crucial role in our personal or professional development, but it works only if we get a proper feedback. An improper feedback like, “things look good to me” does not do any good. Therefore, the real challenge is to know how to get a proper feedback from people around us.

In this article, I have tried to provide a workable “feedback seeking system” which you can use to get a proper feedback. You can also modify the system, if you feel something is missing.

Step 1: Define your feedback goal

Why you want a feedback and on what? The answer to this question matters a lot. A generic feedback like, “all is good” or “there is some problem here and there, but the rest is good” will not do any good. Set a target for why you want a feedback. If you have written something then the feedback you can seek could be related to your writing style, coherence, grammatical and punctuation errors, or overall understandability. You can subdivide your work in this way and ask for feedback about the particular thing you want to know.

Step 2: Qualify your feedback source

Do not seek feedback from anyone and everyone. It will do no good. A proper feedback should come from a qualified source. Ask your senior, your client, your boss, your teacher, or anyone who is more qualified than you are on the subject for the feedback. A washerwoman’s feedback on the structure of your SQL database will serve nothing.

Do not ask your family or the closest friend who knows everything about your project for the feedback. Good or bad, it will never give you the feedback that you can use.

Step 3: Ask targeted question

Ask questions relevant to the feedback goal you set in step one. Do not pose generic question, as it will not fetch desired answer. Ask a targeted question and listen patiently for the answer.

Step 4: Promise anonymity

If feedback sought is for something or someone else then assure your source that his or her identity will be kept hidden if he or she wishes to do that. And if the feedback is about you then tell the feedback source that his or her honest opinion will not tarnish your relationship. This is very important.

Conclusion

Do not lose heart if you do not get positive feedback from all quarters. No matter how smart your source is, he or she can still be short-sighted or wrong. Show confidence in your ability.

Ten factors that affect search engine ranking http://itlist.com/ten-factors-that-affect-search-engine-ranking/ http://itlist.com/ten-factors-that-affect-search-engine-ranking/#comments Sat, 28 Feb 2009 17:21:13 +0000 arshat http://itlist.com/?p=955

Here is the list of top 10 factors that affect search engine ranking.

1. Use of Keywords in Title Tag

If I am allowed to work on only one aspect of a site, I would work on the Title Tag . Put all your keyphrases in your title tag, but also remember not to overstuff it! For best results you gotta optimize each page individually.. Lets say your first page has information about “free antivirus” then you should have key phrases like – “free antivirus, download antivirus, best antivirus” etc. Lets say your second page has information about “firewalls” include keyphrases like “free firewall, best firewall” etc.

2. Keyword Use in Body Text

Now its pretty obvious that if your web page doesn’t contain any information about Antivirus but still contains key phrases like -– “free antivirus, download antivirus, best antivirus”, it aint gonna work!! The point being, please make sure that you have the text in the webpage that you have on your title tag!! Don’t worry about the density of the key words. There is no relation between the density of the keyword and its rank on the search engine

3. Relationship of Body Text Content to Keywords

Remember, google is google because its got some serious smart guys working for it, so don’t be under the impression that fooling them is gonna be easy. Just stuffing a key phrase into a completely unrelated page wont do you much good.

4. Keyword Use in Domain Name

Some disagree with the importance of this one, though I feel it does not play a major role, why take a chance? Especially if you want to start a new site.. That said, remember that you choose to lose more than gain if you have an established site with a good pagerank! Note that there are websites that offer excellent services when it comes to web hosting

5. Keyword Use in Page URL

Again different SEOs take different sides on the importance of this one. I believe it is of some importance, but doesn’t make sense to change the urls for an existing site with a decent pagerank.

6. Keyword Use in ALT Attributes and Image Titles

I think this is extremely important. Maybe even more important than url and domain name. Experince shows that image optimization is a wonderful way to make a page appear higher on the search list to a desired query

7. Keyword Use in H1 Tag

Inspite of critics deeming tweaking with H1 tags as useless, its been proved otherwise. Head up the body text with an H1 containing the keyphrase.

8. Keyword Use in H2, H3, H… Tags

Since we have used it in H1, why not use it in H2, H3, et al..

9. Keyword Use in Bold/Strong Tags

I deem this method as moderately important. It helps Google in analysing what your page is about and what can the reader expect to find on it.

10. Keyword Use in Meta Description Tag

Definitely important. Each page should have a custom title and meta description tag. The ability of the Meta Tag to make it appear on the search list should not be underestimated.

All said and done, it should be remembered that CONTENT is the king!!

The Future is NOW…Online Advertising http://itlist.com/the-future-is-now%e2%80%a6online-advertising/ http://itlist.com/the-future-is-now%e2%80%a6online-advertising/#comments Thu, 26 Feb 2009 16:45:42 +0000 jules http://itlist.com/?p=972 This is advertising in a nutshell; a form of “communication” that attempts to persuade potential customers to purchase or to consume a product or service.

With the economic crisis right here, right now, many businesses are diverting their funds from payroll (very unfortunately) to marketing and advertising with the idea that that is the best investment for their immediate and future growth.

The past:
Newspapers (print ads): Great eye catching graphics and slogans. But aren’t we all now trying to “go green”? How many of us still get the paper delivered to our door? Isn’t it easier and quicker to “go online”? Why bother thumbing through all those pages when we can just type in a keyword and click search.
Television advertisements (commercials) range from a few seconds to several minutes (also program-length infomercials). Advertisements like this have been used to sell every product imaginable over the years. And can cost millions! But so many of us would rather use our favorite tool, the REMOTE, to channel surf, or at least mute those dreaded minutes of commercial time.

Food for thought:
We are in crisis mode, and that is when people turn to brands they know and trust, which translates to value. So, companies will be looking for more cost-effective ways to reach their target audiences. And that is online marketing, with almost instant feedback as to what is working and what isn’t, via the web pages you search, the newsletters you sign up for, the ads you click on, etc…

Many companies now have forums or blogs which create feedback from consumers so the new buyer can get that very important recommendation from the end user, much like a recommendation from a friend or family member.

The future (NOW):
Many experts predict that internet advertising in the USA will continue to rapidly increase within this economic downturn forcing a reduction in overall advertising spending. Many companies will be transferring much of their marketing budget from traditional (TV and print) to the new online media, which will most likely become the major avenue of advertisement over the next few years at a very high rate.
The snowball effect:
Online audiences watch what they want to watch, when they want to watch, and where they want to watch. It’s not just your grandmother’s PC anymore! Cell phones, Blackberrys, Iphones, MP3’s, etc… This audience is sure to increase as technologies progress and becomes more and more available.
There’s no turning back now…online advertising IS the future.

Techie Advice | How to Find the Perfect Domain Name! http://itlist.com/techie-advice-how-to-find-the-perfect-domain-name/ http://itlist.com/techie-advice-how-to-find-the-perfect-domain-name/#comments Wed, 25 Feb 2009 14:33:04 +0000 resourceful http://itlist.com/?p=912 You shouldn’t bother buying a domain name from some fellow in an auction who happens to own the first word association that pops into your mind. Instead of handing over a large amount of money, why not invest in some time to think it over?  Although choosing the best domain name for your website may seem difficult, the best techie advice would suggest you automate your process, which could be as simple as submitting a search on words ending in -us!

I am sure you’ve heard of de.li.cio.us. It redirects to delicious.com, but as a .us domain and social bookmarking site, I can’t help thinking that their creativity was first sparked from the lack of interesting domain names available. If you can take something short and to the point from your search on word navigator, your next step would be to check it’s availability.  The following guidelines can speed up the process:

  • Since there are 3,563 words that end in -us at the time of this posting, the easiest thing to do would be to copy and paste each list (by length) into a text document, which took me about 7 minutes.  You probably won’t take as long, if you copy and paste only half of all the words.
  • In the document, click Edit and Select All. Proceed to toggle the bullets off.  Then use Ctrl+F and type us into the search box.  Click on Find All. You will notice that the -us ending has been selected for all of the words.  Now click on Replace All. Your document should no longer have any of the -us endings.
  • If your document is 75 pages long, perhaps it would be best to weed out words before continuing.  Or you can copy and paste the words in only chunks (maybe 30 words) at a time into this domain name regristration search (clicking on the us extension, while unselecting the com extension), so that your internet browser doesn’t freeze up during the process.

Of the first thirty words I submitted, 14 were available.  Here is my example chunk with unavailable .us domain names crossed out:

fagaceo.us                          furacio.us
felonio.us                          furfuro.us
feracio.us                          garrulo.us
ferocio.us                          gingero.us
fervoro.us                          glaireo.us
filaceo.us                          glamoro.us
flavoro.us                          globulo.us
fractio.us                          gluteno.us
frivolo.us                          glutino.us
froufro.us                          granulo.us
fugacio.us                          gummato.us
fulgoro.us                          gumptio.us
fulguro.us                          hazardo.us
fulmino.us                          hilario.us

Honestly, if I were a business looking for an attractive and modern domain name, gumptio.us would be my first pick!  If you don’t know, gumptious is an adjective that means enterprising (synonym to energetic, industrious, up-and-coming).  Or how about furacio.us?  Hurry up, domain names like these will soon fill up the Web 2.0 (or is it 3.0) scene!  If you really don’t care what the domain name is and just want to set something up quickly, your best bet would be to submit one or two words into a domain name suggestion tool.

Maybe its time to embrace “phisers” and hackers. http://itlist.com/maybe-its-time-to-embrace-%e2%80%9cphisers%e2%80%9d-and-hackers/ http://itlist.com/maybe-its-time-to-embrace-%e2%80%9cphisers%e2%80%9d-and-hackers/#comments Fri, 20 Feb 2009 23:13:21 +0000 letouregg http://itlist.com/?p=835 Sometimes unusual times call for unusual measures, and to borrow the cliché: do we bite the bullet, and change tact from the present criminalization of ID theft? I know mine would be a very unpopular hypothesis, but one common characteristic of hackers –who by the way may easily be into ID theft and phishing – is that they are usually people with above average intelligence. Kudos to all the companies dedicated to dealing with this menace, usually as a technological pro-bono gesture. Thumbs up to them.

But it might be necessary to ask ourselves: is it possible to eradicate ID theft/ phishing, or at the very least make it so rare as to become almost a non-issue? Do we have the technology to overpower these malicious individuals, and make their ‘art’ so difficult and so financially unproductive so that we end up forcing them to look for legitimate ways of spending their free time?

My answer is an emphatic No. unlike the vehicle industry which takes years to produce a more advanced simple gadget like a carburetor, computer innovations present us with almost daily new, easier to use, hip devices which make life so much fun. Therefore no government can ever discourage the internet revolution and its ever astounding innovations, unless they want to risk a countrywide mutiny.

But could hackers/phisers be successfully re-integrated into the law-abiding populace? Should criminal activity be seen to be encouraged? What about the victims? But if we will never defeat the miscreants, then what is the alternative?

My view, however unpopular, is this: in exchange for leniency/possible outright forgiveness, I’d propose the hacker and the “phisher” to be presented with two alternatives:

  1. A sort of a six month moratorium, where total cooperation with law enforcement agencies should lead to their being absorbed into a special IT security institute – a sort of a half-way house – with good pay, but 50% of it goes to reimburse their victims.
  2.  For those who refuse to come out of their dark criminal world- a long jail term plus hefty fines should await them. I think the reasonable ones would take the former option.

Make More Money Online http://itlist.com/make-more-money-online/ http://itlist.com/make-more-money-online/#comments Thu, 19 Feb 2009 19:37:33 +0000 blogaholic http://itlist.com/?p=846 The global financial crisis continues to deepen with the most progressive nation in the world, the United States, having major companies declaring bankruptcy and massive layoffs that have already reached a stunning 3.7 million by January 2009. This financial crisis now spreads worldwide and many fear the loss of their livelihood or their employment. While many desperately try to regain other means of employment, there are those ingenious enough to find alternative ways of making money. And no other industry has enjoyed tremendous growth than the worldwide web.

At present, ecommerce expands steadily as more consumers discover the convenience and perks of shopping online. Consumers can attest to obtaining more savings through discounts and coupons versus the traditional purchases in stores and shopping malls. More than the convenience and the savings, there are ultimately more products available at the click of your mouse. This growth goes hand-in-hand with more opportunities to make money through advertising and marketing. Following are ways that people can take advantage of online opportunities:

Affiliate Marketing – Success stories of those endowed with marketing prowess proliferate in the web by serving as affiliates of major websites offering products and services online. Some set up their own website, blogs (online journals), or online magazines and advertise products and services. Income can either be a monthly fee or commission-based, or a combination of both.
Blog Advertising – Those who have the gift of writing set-up online journals and get paid for articles that advertise products or services. Payment is made per article with fees that vary depending on the popularity of the blog. The more viewers and readers that your blog has, the higher you can charge for each article. Famous blogs charge as high as $500 per article and are known to earn thousands per month on advertising.

Job Opportunities – There are websites that bring together part-time or fulltime job seekers and contractors who need jobs to be done. Payment can either be fixed or on per hour basis for computer programmers, web designers, graphic artists, writers, and many more.

Other than collateral business that ecommerce brings, some also make money online via foreign exchange trading or stock and options trading. Of course, these are high risk opportunities and suited for those who have experience in the finance industry. More than opportunities, they can also be classified as high risk investments. Just as many have flourished, many have likewise perished.

However, let us provide a word of caution to those who will dare to venture the internet in the hopes of increasing their earnings. Similar to any growing industry, it is also a place where thieves and scammers operate to steal the hard-earned money of honest consumers. Whether you are investing or taking on a job, do your homework and learn as much as you can about the risks involved. Get feedback from those who have entered the same venture or ensure that the reputation of those you do business with is flawless. Learn about internet security and identity theft. Discover the scams that have already been made. With the limitless information the internet offers, data and even advice from the wise will not be difficult to find.

A Message To The Small Business That’s Been In The Family For 75 Years http://itlist.com/a-message-to-the-small-business-that%e2%80%99s-been-in-the-family-for-75-years/ http://itlist.com/a-message-to-the-small-business-that%e2%80%99s-been-in-the-family-for-75-years/#comments Tue, 17 Feb 2009 03:58:36 +0000 IT List http://itlist.com/?p=854 An economic downturn doesn’t always spell disaster for small business.

Of course if you aren’t paying attention to the news, nothing can probably save you.  But if you are watching your balance sheet, reviewing spending, and accounts receivable, and looking for ways to cut unnecessary costs you’ve got part of the idea under consideration.

It’s probably also good time to cut back on advertising and marketing – NOT!

There is no better time than now to build a new website.  It’s easy.  It’s affordable.  Carpe diem.  Seize the day.

This depression won’t last forever and there is no better time to profit from it than now.

Your competition is dropping like flies.  They can’t pay their bills.  They are laying off talented employees and closing their doors.  You can acquire their liquidated inventory for pennies on the dollar.  Their customers already know you and are looking for someone reliable to do business with.

But how to get the word out without spending those dollars that are more precious than today ever?

Media and print are the expensive dinosaurs of yesteryear.  They went the way of brick and mortar stores when the internet exploded into our lives.

It’s never been easier or more affordable to build a website.  Gossimer offers 3 Website Builder packages rich with marketing features.

Email marketing, search engine optimization, e-commerce – these are all smart ways to drive new customers to the front door without spending the big bucks.

“But,” says the senior partner, “We can’t afford a programmer and all that expensive equipment.”

That’s when the light bulb goes off.  He thinks of his grandson, the computer nut!

In days it’s all agreed to.  Grandpa is paying for college anyhow.  And grandson is helping with the business he will someday inherit by putting up the fresh new website with the “What You See Is What You Get Products” by Gossimer.

Innovative and creative ideas have kept them in business for the past 75.

And that’s how to keep the family business alive for the next 25!

Security Precautions For Wireless Internet Users http://itlist.com/security-precautions-for-wireless-internet-users/ http://itlist.com/security-precautions-for-wireless-internet-users/#comments Mon, 16 Feb 2009 04:09:32 +0000 Tiffany B http://itlist.com/?p=839 Using a wireless internet network ( Wi-Fi) has many advantages for internet users. It allows you to be able to work in any room of your home and even outside your house and still be able to connect to the internet. Along with the advantages, Wi-Fi also comes with some security issues. If you can pick your Wi-Fi signal from outside your house, that means that others will be able to do the same. Wireless internet users need to take some extra precautions to protect their information from being taken or hacked into by others.

Protecting Yourself At Home

The best way to protect our computer when you have Wi-Fi is to make sure that you have an up-to-date antivirus program installed on your computer. Most anti-virus software will automatically scan your computer to check for any possible threats or viruses. By enabling a WEP or WPA (encryptions on your computer) you can help prevent any intruders from accessing your computer and installing a virus or worm on it. This is very important for wireless internet users as any half-way decent hacker can use your Wi-Fi connection to get into your computer.

When you look for a router for your wireless internet, make sure to get one that has a firewall installed on it. This will greatly reduce the chances that someone will be able to hack into your computer. If you find that your router does not have a firewall installed on it, there are firewall software programs that you can add to your existing router.

Disable the SSID link on your wireless internet. The SSID link is a network that the Wi-Fi uses that regularly broadcast over the air. If you disable the SSID, that means that others can not access your network. This means they won’t have access to your computer either.

Protecting Yourself At Public Wi-Fi Spots

If you have the proper software on your computer, you will be able to go places like local coffee shops, hotels, and airports which are hot spots for wireless internet. This means that you can log onto the computer from these places and share the network. Sharing the network means that you may have a greater chance of someone accessing your computer information or sending a virus into your computer. A good idea when using wireless internet at a public place is to never put any personal identification on your computer at that time. Don’t give your social security number at that time to anybody or order anything online with a credit card while using the public internet.

The Internet and your child http://itlist.com/the-internet-and-your-child/ http://itlist.com/the-internet-and-your-child/#comments Sat, 10 Jan 2009 01:43:55 +0000 Janeita http://itlist.com/?p=43 Through the evolution of the Internet mankind has tapped into a wealth of knowledge that would otherwise take centuries if not years to acquire reading books and awaiting for them to be published. The Internet is a fast and efficient way of getting real time facts to quench our need for accurate information. The method is quite simple, a computer, a high speed Internet connection and money to pay the monthly bills and you are on your way to embark on a journey that takes you around the world just sitting in your favorite chair. Type it and with a bit of patience you will find it.Through instant messaging and e-mails a gap has been bridged between families, companies seeking skilled workers and list goes on and on.

There are however other sides to the Internet that many at times turn a blind eye. While information opens our horizons to think and to reason at a more advanced level than our ancestors, such information if not censured can dreadfully carve certain behavioural patterns that leave an indelible mark in our lives. The busy rush hours and constant deadlines to meet, have caused parents to unintentionally forget their parental duties towards their children. The result is a generation that grows craving for attention, affection and at times finding it through the wrong outlets. Parents should therefore take the time out to censure the information that their children are being exposed to.

Windows Vista comes equipped with certain gadgets that help curtail the exposure to risky information and people that children may encounter and also limits the possibility of them downloading files to the computer that may contain viruses,Trojans etc. The gadgets allow you to control the sites the children visit, the time they spend on these sites, which video games they can play etc. To turn on Parental Controls using Windows Vista go to Start, then Control Panel then User Accounts and finally Set Up Parental Controls from there you establish the controls you wants to set for your child.

For traditional users of Windows XP this comes through the web service Windows Live Family Safety at www.fss.live.com and from there you follow the given instructions. The Internet should be seen as a cyber library but care at all times must be taken to control the information that we take in and give out from our favorite chair.

Cleaning your Hardisk before sacking your old computer/laptop http://itlist.com/cleaning-your-hardisk-before-sacking-your-old-computerlaptop/ http://itlist.com/cleaning-your-hardisk-before-sacking-your-old-computerlaptop/#comments Fri, 09 Jan 2009 01:45:29 +0000 Janeita http://itlist.com/?p=111 If you have plans to donate the computer you have used for years to charity or to some one you know, it is worth taking the time to clean the hard disk before passing on your inheritance. This saves you the trouble of having to worry about personal information falling into the wrong hands. Cleaning the hard disk does not involve deleting files by sending them to Recycle Bin, because even so the information is still there. Cleaning the hard disk involves reformatting it, that way you will be sure to clean all valuable information from it. This is usually done preparing it to accept another Operating System. Different operating systems require different procedures , but the aim is the same, to wipe the hard disk of valuable information that could fall into the wrong hands. Assuming you have already backed up all the information that you deemed necessary the next steps are as followed:

For Linux users the process starts with a download of a live CD from www.knoppix.net. Once the Cd had been copied the user boots from the CD. The next step is to use the shred command that was designed specifically for the purpose of deleting files securely. If your hard disk name is /dev/sda or /dev/hda then you type the following command:

#shred -n * -vz /dev/sda —— for sda users
or # shred -n5 -vz/dev/hda—-for hda users
-n*— indicates the number of times you wish the disk to be overwritten (an amount of 25 is sufficient)
-v —-Shows progress and;
-z —- Adds a final overwrite with zeros to hide shredding

There is another option that can be used depending on the amount of information to be destroyed and the urgency of destroying such information. This includes using Darik´s Boot and Nuke CD(DBAN), which is basically self-contained boot disk that automatically and completely cleans your hard disk.

For Windows Users one goes to the start menu, right click on the hard drive and click format.Darik´s Boot and Nuke CD(DBAN) can be used as well if the user wishes to do so. There are hundreds of soft wares on the market that claim to delete your hard drive permanently, based on my research DBAN seems to be the most recommended.

Once you have formatted your hard drive you can now choose the Operating system you wish to load on it. These steps were basically outlined with the intention to educate users about the importance of sanitizing their hard drives in the event they wish to discard or give away their computers/laptop.There are many businesses however that have not adopted any policy to dispose of used corporate records, the result sensitive information falling in the hands of hungry criminals waiting for the next attack. A plan should be laid out whether individual/cooperate, to ensure that the person entrusted to do such procedures is qualified and above all trustworthy.

How to improve your Computer´s performance http://itlist.com/how-to-improve-your-computer%c2%b4s-performance/ http://itlist.com/how-to-improve-your-computer%c2%b4s-performance/#comments Thu, 08 Jan 2009 01:50:51 +0000 Janeita http://itlist.com/?p=45 For those who like powerful racing cars and know the effort that teams put in to getting maximum speed on a F1 race they will certainly understand how important it is to have a computer that is operating efficiently and that gives top results. Organization is the key to achieve this.

At times we have hundreds of files on our computers that we do not use, just sitting there. We should establish periods that we do a bit of system cleaning on the computer, deleting unnecessary files and organizing folders in an efficient manner that makes them easily found and with the proper file headings.Computers are like cars they need to be maintained!.

If you have experienced a few system hang ups and had to reboot the computer it is worth running scandisk on the computer to detect and fix errors that arise as a result of these system hang ups and the presence of viruses. But what is scandisk you may be asking yourself? Scandisk is a maintenance tool that aims to search and correct bad clusters when a program was prematurely aborted. At the send of the scan a report is produced that informs the user the files scanned and the amount of space scanned.

Always ensure that the signatures of your Anti-Virus is up to date this will curtail the possibility of viruses infesting your computer system. Ensure that you do frequent system checks to detect viruses, spy ware etc.

Never open e-mails if you do not know the user this will be committing system suicide and be suspicious of formal and informal e-mails that may come from friends as well. They usually do not address you personally eg. Hello , we would like you have a look at our pictures thanks bye.

If you use a password(and I recommend you start doing so) to enter your computer, HIDE IT! DO NOT PASTE IN ON A POST IT AND LEAVE IT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE IN OBVIOUS AREAS!.Another useful tip is to scan all Cds, pen drives, floppy disks for viruses before accessing any file on them. For those that are not computer cracks on the matter then every protection can never be enough to protect you as you navigate the worldwide web. Protecting your password can also come in the form of writing a .htacess file that guarantees protection of sensitive information on your system and thus curtailing hackers and possible phishing.

Once you are expanding your computer operations and sense that your system is slowing down, this could be an indication of the necessity of more memory space or virus infections on your system. Installing memory is a simple process that can be done from home if you one is confident enough to do so, or with a qualified person if not.

Tips on how to choose the ideal Anti-Virus for your computer http://itlist.com/tips-on-how-to-choose-the-ideal-anti-virus-for-your-computer/ http://itlist.com/tips-on-how-to-choose-the-ideal-anti-virus-for-your-computer/#comments Tue, 06 Jan 2009 23:39:41 +0000 Janeita http://itlist.com/?p=51 Computers are mindless machines that function through programs that have been installed to meet the needs of their users. This fact makes them susceptible to viruses and hence requires the use of Anti-virus programs that protect and detect such attacks. An in depth research into the type of Anti-virus that best suits you depends entirely on your daily use of the computer. It is therefore essential an in depth knowledge regarding the most recent viruses and the old timers. Most Anti-viruses offer a 30 day test period and from there you can decide if you want to continue using their program. The most popular Anti-virus programs are Norton, AVG, MacAfee Anti-virus and Sophos Anti-virus just to name a few. A few tips that one should consider are:

The investment one is willing to make to acquire the Anti-virus. Expensive does not necessarily mean it is the best. Try to research on the features and advantages different anti-virus packages will give you when compared to their competitors

You own personal needs. Are you an entrepreneur or an organization? While you may take the necessary care to ensure that you follow all laid down guidelines to minimize all possible virus infections, your fellow man may not necessarily share the same interest. In cases like these you will need an Anti-virus program that offers protection against all possible viruses.

What are the features of the Anti-Virus you are considering? Does it have the latest updates against new viruses? You should always choose an Anti-virus program that has the latest definition and above all that is updated on a regular basis to protect your computer.

Ensure that the Anti-virus automatically updates itself as this will reduce the chances of virus infections if by chance you happen to forget to update it manually. This special feature not only guarantees that the update is done when you least expect it, it also can be configured to do so when you go online.

It is never advisable to use two Anti-virus programs at once. There can be conflict between the two programs and you end up creating a weak point for viruses to leash through on your computer. Therefore it is a myth to believe that two Anti-virus programs will guarantee maximum protection.

Ensure that your Anti-Virus offers you the option to eliminate the virus. It makes absolutely no sense detecting a virus and then not having features to be rid of it, after all who wants a virus ever present locked in quarantine on your computer?

How to clean your Laptop or PC http://itlist.com/how-to-clean-your-laptop-or-pc/ http://itlist.com/how-to-clean-your-laptop-or-pc/#comments Tue, 06 Jan 2009 02:33:08 +0000 Janeita http://itlist.com/?p=96 While there is much talk about programs to protect your computer from hackers and viruses, we forget the external element of the computer, the hardware. When was the last time you took the time out to clean your computer? If you have to dig in the drawers of your memory then it is obvious is is time for some computer cleaning.

The hardware is the first component of the computer that we come in contact with and care should be taken to keep it clean. This not only increase ones productivity it also is a healthy approach.Imagine touching a mouse that has layers of grease from centuries and centuries of sticky finger contacts, or a keyboard that has tons of overnight snacks embedded between it´s keys, this obviously is a cause for alarm.

The steps to clean ones hardware does not not involve any special product than the simple traditional methods of a soft brush,a little water and maybe a piece of cloth .It is important that a day is set aside to do this so as to avoid disturbance during the process. There also has to be an established order in mind to know which parts you intend to clean first.

After unplugging all components and and an order has been mentally established to clean the different components, all that is left now is patience. The keyboard which is basically the ‘hands’ of the whole system can suffer alterations if dust and crumbs are not taken from it quickly. To remove dirt from the keyboard one can use a professional keyboard cleaner that has been adapted justly for this purpose. Turning the Keyboard over on a piece of paper and gently shaking it to remove all accumulated dust ,one then passes a soft brush to remove any excess dirt on the outside of the Keyboard. The same applies for Laptops.

The monitor and the CPU can both be cleaned using a  non-abrasive cloth to remove any excess of dirt. Areas like the USB ports generally have accumulated dust and once again the use of a small soft brush is handy. For those you wish to use a professional Laptop screen cleaner , this is highly optional, but one will achieve the same results with simple conventional methods. The aim of all of this is that you clean and not destroy while cleaning.

The mouse is another gadget that allows us to enjoy an efficient user interface with our system and with the realms beyond(Internet).Excess dust and grime will compromise it´s function and you will notice this based on the time response it gives when you move it. Care should be taken in opening it and a soft bush should be used so as to not damage it.

There is no need to open the casing of the CPU nor the Laptop. All that requires cleaning resides on the external part of the casing. If you are not a professional, opening may void all warranty rights and you may unintentionally damage some internal part. The use of cotton to clean is a good option but I prefer a brush.

Surviving Recession through the internet. http://itlist.com/surviving-recession-through-the-internet/ http://itlist.com/surviving-recession-through-the-internet/#comments Mon, 05 Jan 2009 12:39:27 +0000 Janeita http://itlist.com/?p=44 While recession is not exactly seen as ‘daddy´s day at the park’ it does not necessary have to be a death sentence to someone´s career. There are vast opportunities that one can undertake to make money through the Internet even in recession. Care should be taken at this time that all measures are taken to protect ones self from any possible identity theft that may occur. The last thing you need is to have your identity stolen while you browse from web page to web page. If you have something to offer then follow these simple steps to ensure your product get to the targeted section of the market.

Make a plan about your business that outlines the service/product you intend to offer and the market segment you expect to reach. In order to execute an action , there has to be plan that governs all the steps that one intends to make. This will prepare you in advance for the many responsibilities that may arise as you undertake you mission step by step.

Create a website for yourself . There are thousands of website packages that allow you to build a website at an affordable price and even offers privacy protection.Organize your website to ensure that it is easy to navigate and attracts the attention of online navigators. This can be achieved though optimization of your website using tools such as SEO.Finally ensure that you have taken the necessary precautions to avoid Identity theft

As budget is the determining factor in any recession there are quite a few ways for you to advertise your services without having to spend a lot. E-mail marketing for example is a cheap way that guarantees this.E-mail marketing requires that one has to an organized database in operation and a system that manages the messages you intend to send out.

There are thousands of websites that claim to drive Internet traffic to ones website, this has to be carefully researched as at times there really is to gain to this , just spam and not Internet traffic. Another point is that in order to be aggressive in the market, one has to be aggressive to defend his/her product and brand,  always check to ensure that untrue advertisements regarding your product are not made and that you are not hosting your competitor on your website!!

Understand the desires of your customers and always review blog posts to see what hey are saying. By doing so you will be informed as to what you need to offer your clients in order to stand out in the market by these very blog posts.

For those who do not have a product to offer at the time and may consider working as a freelancer special care should be taken when looking for at home jobs on the Internet. Never take a job that you have to pay for, after all that is the main reason you are behind a job, to get paid!!. I recommend Odesk, Elance if you wish to work as a freelancer using the Internet.
