For an adventurous type, Freelance journalism is indeed is a good career option. I am saying for the adventurous type because it requires lots of running through the cities, and scanning the rough neighborhoods for a story to cover. You need to be always on your foot, and constantly searching for stories to make a decent living as a freelance writer. It is not an easy job to do, at least not when one is starting out.

To succeed as a freelance journalist, you need to have:

  • A willingness to spend as much time as required chasing a good story.
  • A desire to travel from place to place in search of a good story.
  • A knack for working under tight-deadline

If you have these three traits then freelance journalism is a right career for you, and the more you will do each of the things discussed above, the more successful you will become in your career. This is not a career for you, if you are looking for a job that gives you lots of personal space. The news story is the life of a freelance journalist, and he has time for nothing else.

A day of freelance journalist begins quite early in the morning when the editor of the newspaper gives the topic to cover, which is followed by calling up concerned person for interviews and interview bites. The information collection goes on till evening after which the journalist needs to sit down and craft a story using the information he collected. In the process, he may also require to verify the credential of data collected and recheck the numbers. He will have to do all these things before mid-night when the newspaper goes for printing.

The day of a freelance journalist ends after news submission to begin once again at 6 AM for the next day news. Not everyone can take this, so you need to ask yourself if you can handle such pressure or not.

Increasing your writing income is something that most writers are looking to do.  Actually, probably all writers are looking to increase their income.  Not many people would complain about being more comfortable financially.  But as a writer that can be tough, especially if you’re having trouble finding work.  The key is managing your opportunities to earn a residual income, in addition to your main writing projects.

A residual income keeps a steady sum of money flowing into your account.  This you can save for a rainy day, or spend as you need to, to keep the career going.  Residual income’s usually don’t earn as much as your mainstay, but they are a good supplement.

Think about the opportunities before you.  If you haven’t created a personal blog, you really should consider doing so.  It’s a good way to speak your mind, get noticed, and sell some ad space to make a little extra money.  Every writer should have a personal blog, and even if you don’t have the full time to invest, at least a simple blogspot.com one would suffice.  Combined with Google’s Adsense program, you can make yourself a nice little cash cow.

Try some seasonal opportunities.  There’s always someone out there looking for writers to write copy for season specific events, or advertisements.  Those are decent jobs that are fairly easy to complete, and they pay pretty well most of the time.  It’s a nice easy job that won’t detract from your main projects, but that keeps you writing, as well as earning.

If you have the sort of degree necessary, you could consider teaching other writers.  Many universities offer opportunities for independent teachers.  As long as you have the credentials, you can get paid for your time.  Plus you get exposed to new styles, and have a chance to communicate with other writers.  Now you’re not only earning some side money, but also helping your own writing to grow.

Freelancing is not an easy job, not because you cannot write, but because there are too many writers vying for too few openings. This is a classical case of buyer’s market; hence, as the textbook says buyers will set the rule and will expect you to follow them. The quality of this initial contact will increase the possibility of your getting hired, yet most of the freelance writers never take this seriously.

As a freelance writer, you need to understand that every word that you write is in itself an advertisement for you. Hence, choose your words with much caution when you are writing mails to your existing client or prospects. Before going through your samples that you have attached with your application, your prospective clients will read the cover letter or the mail that you have written, and the prospect will only decide to click the attachment link, if he or she is impressed with what and how you have written your e-mail.

If you are a freelance writer or aspire to be one, always remember to take every communication with your client seriously, and use every opportunity you get and show how well you can write. Unlike other freelance professionals, for you, promoting yourself is easy. You are cut out to do that!
