Well, by considering which phone offers the features that will matter the most.  While both the Droid and iPhone look similar, and even operate similarly, they differ on some key issues that tend to be very important to user taste.  First off, the service providers.

Droid is on the Verizon network, which is widely regarded to be the best cellphone network.  This is because Verizon has the broadest coverage across the United States.  AT&T sort of pales in comparison to Verizon’s coverage area.  Many iPhone users complain about a high rate of dropped calls.  Something Verizon users don’t complain about as often.

Which is where you should consider, how much are they actually going to use this smartphone as a phone?  If you think your target audience would prefer to text or use the 3G network for email and internet, opposed to phone calls, either phone works.  AT&T has issues with dropped calls, but not with texting, etc.

Another major difference is that the Droid has a hardware keyboard accessable by sliding the screen aside.  This could be a great advantage if you can’t stand touch screen keyboards.  And let’s face it, touch screen keyboards usually leave something to be desired.  But the problem with slide features in phones is that they usually wear down and break quickly.  This means your Droid could have a shorter lifespan than an iPhone because of the sliding motion.  Even when protected by warranty, that’s still going to be a hassle.

The iPhone also has one other major advantage, and that’s the iTunes App Store.  The iPhone has over 100,000 different applications for every variety of uses you can think of.  The Droid store only offers 10,000 at the moment.  Apple as the more popular retailer will be the more likely to keep expanding it’s applications quickly.

So as an overall verdict, if you want the best gadget to play with, go for the iPhone.  The network isn’t as good, but more applications means more entertainment, and access to iTunes means more accessable music and videos.  But if you actually want to make calls with your phone, the Droid is your best bet for the Verizon network.

Constantly Creating New Ideas And Topics http://itlist.com/constantly-creating-new-ideas-and-topics/ http://itlist.com/constantly-creating-new-ideas-and-topics/#comments Sat, 27 Jun 2009 02:08:14 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1421 When your profession falls into writing, no matter what sort of writing it is that you do, the demand for coming up with new ideas is always very, very high.  Therein lay the problem of keeping up on that demand with new relevant ideas to write about.  Which is why you need to make sure you’re well aware of the many tactics writers use to help them come up with new ideas constantly.  Just remember, this is a skill that will take a lot of practice to really maintain properly, but keep at it and you’ll find yourself having more new ideas that you’ll ever know what to do with.

One of the most common methods, and one that you should most definitely be employing already, is to keep an idea notepad with you at all times.  Not necessarily an actual pen and paper mini notebook, but something to function as such.  If you have a smart phone, like an iPhone or Blackberry, you can use their note taking features to quickly jot down anything that pops into your head.  This keeps you ahead of the game with a wealth of ideas that you can look to later, when you find yourself in need.

Read.  Can’t stress that one enough.  The more you put your energy towards learning new things, or reading new ideas, whether through books or magazines or online articles, the more information you’re taking in that you can call upon at a later date.  Extraordinarily useful when coming up with a new topic to write about.

Find a friend or colleague to bounce a few ideas off.  Let them know about the concept and tell them some things you were considering, or ways you want to approach writing about the idea.  The input they have could help you guide yourself into a brilliant new direction you couldn’t have thought of on your own.

If you find yourself struggling to think of anything while sitting at your desk, take a break.  Go outside for a few minutes, get some fresh air and clear your head.  You’ll find yourself feeling much more refreshed, and after wicking away the fatigue, you’ll be in a much better place to re-energize your thinking.

Finally, as a last resort, twist around another idea you’ve already read about or heard about.  If you can’t find an idea all to your own, borrow someone else’s.  Don’t just rehash an article or book that you’ve read before of course.  But take what you learned there, or the basic concept, and apply it to your own outlook, and your own unique writing voice to manufacture an entirely new piece of work.

How to Write Crowd-Pulling Headlines Part -I http://itlist.com/how-to-write-crowd-pulling-headlines-part-i/ http://itlist.com/how-to-write-crowd-pulling-headlines-part-i/#comments Mon, 22 Jun 2009 03:32:01 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=1412 Headlines are the most important part of a blog post or an article. It works as an interest generator. If a good headline persuades the visitor to read the complete article, a bad one pushes the reader off. There are certain principles you need to follow if you want to increase the reading rate of your articles.

KISSS it!

Keep it short, simple and sweet. You do not need to be cryptic to sound profound or useful. Simplicity is brilliance. Remove ambiguous words from the headline, and try to limit the length of the headline to 5-6 words.

Which of the following headline makes the article look more useful?

  1. X has slashed its shirt’s price by 30 percent.
  2. 30 percent off on X shirt!

What in it for me?

This is the question every user asks when confronted with anything that asks for his or her attention. Your headline should provide a definite answer to this question. Talk about the big benefits you have to offer.

Example:

  1. Learn to Enhance your Pictures in 3 Steps.
  2. Get the Subscription FREE

Announcements

Announcements seed curiosity in the reader. Instead of some incremental advancement, people like to see some groundbreaking innovation, and announcements give them the feeling that something new has come along, which is radically different from what they already have. Announcements satiate the readers’ psychological need for newness.

Example:

  1. Introducing All-New iPhone at Never-Before Price.
  2. Finally, Life Has Been Found on Mars!

Ask Questions

Ask relevant questions, questions breed involvement. A question offers an entrée into the mind of the reader as it forces the reader to think, and the more your readers will think, the more involved they will become with the article.

Example:

  1. Is Your Home Safe?
  2. Are You Getting What You Deserve?

Share Secrets

The word “Secret” suggests the reader that some insider information is being shared, so they pay more attention to the article following the headline starting with “Secret”. Everyone wants to be in the inner circle and no one likes to be an outsider. Tap on it!

Example:

  1. Secret of Monetizing Twitter
  2. Insider’s Secret of Money Making

Extend Your iPhone’s Battery Life http://itlist.com/extend-your-iphones-battery-life/ http://itlist.com/extend-your-iphones-battery-life/#comments Fri, 12 Jun 2009 20:26:58 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1388 Anybody who uses an iPhone as their primary personal organizational tool for your business and personal life knows that the battery life of the unit leaves something to be desired.  And that’s putting it nicely.  Really if you’re relying on your iPhone to manage your life, and you rely on using 3G to do so, that battery is going to die very fast.  But there are a few things you can do to at least prolong your battery’s life, in the long term and short term.  Some of them you probably didn’t even realize would help.

Such as leaving your iPhone on all the time.  Take advantage of the sleep mode, and don’t turn your iPhone off when not in use, as it takes more extra juice to turn the unit on and off than if you had just left your iPhone on in the first place.  Also try to consolidate your personal and business emails into as few email addresses as possible.  This way there are fewer email addresses to check, meaning your iPhone won’t have to burn energy tapping into the network to keep up with them.

Edit your brightness settings so that your auto brightness is turned off, this way you won’t burn power by keeping your device monitoring your surroundings and automatically changing the screen brightness accordingly.  You also want to keep your screen brightness as dim as possible, but so that you can still see everything just fine.  This way you aren’t consuming any extra power by lighting the screen more than is necessary.

And finally, if you rely on Wi-Fi often for many of your iPhone tasks, make sure that you use it sparingly, and remember to turn Wi-Fi off after use.  Keeping an internet connection like that is a huge power drain on your little iPhone, and you’ll find the battery dying very quickly should you leave Wi-Fi on for long periods of time.  But make us of it sparingly and you’ll be fine.

Beyond that you just want to ensure that at least once a week you’re using up almost all the battery power in your iPhone’s battery to just about the point it runs out of juice.  Then you want to charge the unit until it’s back at 100% power, that way you’ll extend your battery’s long term life, and will consistently reset the device so that your battery won’t lose it’s charge as quickly as it would otherwise.

Does iPod Touch or iPhone Provide A Better Media Experience? http://itlist.com/does-ipod-touch-or-iphone-provide-a-better-media-experience/ http://itlist.com/does-ipod-touch-or-iphone-provide-a-better-media-experience/#comments Wed, 15 Apr 2009 22:46:44 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1284 Who doesn’t want an awesome portable media outlet?  Something on which to either play the odd game, or watch a few videos whether you be stuck in standstill traffic, or have some down time on the train.  There are plenty of options, most notably the new iPhone and iPod Touch, the only problem is deciding which is better for your needs, as they both offer relatively different features, each with their own pro’s and con’s.

A few downers on the iPhone for using it as a portable media outlet more than a phone, is that you’ll kill your battery ridiculously fast, making the thing practically useless when you actually want to call or text someone.  Apple is sort of becoming notorious for manufacturing products with disappointing battery life, not to mention the fact that Apple doesn’t manufacture replacement battery packs, or anything else of that sort to replace your electricity on the go.  Well nothing besides a car charger anyway, but you’re not always in your car when you need a charge!

Not to mention the biggest iPhone storage capacity is 16gb, not a lot if you’re not planning on doubling your iPhone as a video/game center.  But you would be incredibly surprised at how fast you’ll fill that 16gb, especially if you’re considering buying  few seasons of your favorite television show to pop on your iPhone.

Which is why I say, and prefer, the iPod Touch as a much better outlet.  A much more reasonable and manageable 32GB of storage space, allowing for twice the content of the iPhone.  You won’t have as many battery issues either, as you’ll only be using this device for media, which is exactly what iPod Touch is designed for.  All the same games, video functionality, photo storage, music storage, only better battery performance and more space for all those things you love.

Of course Touch isn’t as convenient as iPhone considering the fact you can always surf the internet and access the iTunes store via the 3G network.  Whereas with Touch you have to be near a Wi-Fi hotspot.  But then it’s all about what you’re looking for.  If you want to play a lot of games and watch a lot of videos on your mobile device, you’ll find better performance capabilities from the iPod Touch.  Whereas if you want a phone with the best gaming a video watching capabilities on the market, but you’re not going to use those things too much, then by all means iPhone away.

Is Nokia’s N97 The Smartest Of The Smartphones? http://itlist.com/is-nokias-n97-the-smartest-of-the-smartphones/ http://itlist.com/is-nokias-n97-the-smartest-of-the-smartphones/#comments Thu, 09 Apr 2009 22:03:38 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1263 As far as smartphones go, for something reliable, and with plenty of industry support, you’re likely to go for either an iPhone or a Blackberry.  But, if any of the hype can be believed, Nokia just may have a smartphone to outdo anything seen on the market previously with the long awaited Nokia N97 which is set to release next month.  Although I’m a bit leery, especially considering the way Nokia has promised to conquer in the past, and has as of yet failed to do so.  Well, that and the fact that the last iPhone killer, the Blackberry Storm, wasn’t so much an iPhone killer, as it was a bad iPhone imitation.

But N97 has plenty of features that would set it apart, and make it a fantastic addition to the smartphone lineup.  One of them being Nokia’s trademark flip up screen revealing a full and remarkably easy to use QWERTY keyboard.  Much better than either the Storm or iPhone’s on screen keyboards that can be a bit touchy to use accurately, especially when you’re trying to type something quickly.

Not to mention the N97 also offers 32GB of on board memory, as well as offering a micro SD card slot, which means you can add another 16GB of space, leveling out the N97’s storage space to 48GB.  Much, much larger than either the iPhone or Blackberry, and considering you can use multiple cards, the N97’s memory is pretty much limitless. A huge advantage over iPhone which doesn’t offer any removable memory options whatsoever.

And let’s also consider the fact that the N97 will also offer A-GPS as well as traditional GPS.  The abilities to play WMA/MP3/WAV/AAC audio files, and WMV/MPEG4/GP2 video files.  N97 will have a pocket office function, with mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF Viewer, making it perfect for finishing up that PowerPoint presentation for work at the last minute.  All that and a motion sensing touch screen the likes of iPhone and Storm.

Meaning on paper the Nokia N97 looks pretty good, except that most of the tech demo videos show a phone that seems to be fairly buggy, and ridiculously unresponsive at times.  Which is exactly why I’m not buying into the hype, and I’ll be waiting until the N98 is released with all the same features and none of the bugs that will be reported.

The Touchscreen revolution has arrived! http://itlist.com/the-touchscreen-revolution-has-arrived/ http://itlist.com/the-touchscreen-revolution-has-arrived/#comments Wed, 31 Dec 2008 01:33:27 +0000 Tony http://itlist.com/?p=56 Comfort of use is one of the major factors one would consider when buying a gadget or any appliance for that matter. This might also be the main motivation of why tech companies have started moving their devices’ input methods from the traditional keypad or keyboard to the touchscreen.

From a logical point of view, touchscreen devices are more intuitive. Instead of using several keypresses on your phone to navigate to a menu, you can simply touch an icon on the screen to accomplish the same task. In this arena, the iPhone must be the most popular and innovative device, prompting other cellphone manufacturers to follow suit and create their own “touch” phones. Before the iPhone came into the scene, most touchscreen devices made use of a stylus or similar tool to interact with the device. However, they were not as successful as the iPhone in their implementation. The touchscreen was more of a novelty than a tool that one can rely on when using the device, thus the need for a keypad or keyboard to still be attached to the device.

Then came the iPhone. The touchscreen on the iPhone was made the primary input tool. Everything you had do on the iPhone, you can do with the touchscreen. And it wasn’t just a normal touchscreen that was included in the phone. The iPhone also offered multi-touch input. Multi-touch allowed the user to use two or more fingers at the same time to touch the screen and provide a more intuitive way to interact with the phone. You can now zoom in or zoom out a picture with the use of your thumb and index finger with a pinching motion on the screen.

Microsoft also had it’s eye on touchscreen technology for a long time now. In 2007, Microsoft displayed a working version of their Microsoft Surface device which was designed initially to be used for kiosks found at hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. The Microsoft Surface looks like a small table that had an interactive touchscreen for a tabletop. The user can touch the screen, or even just put different objects like cellphones and digital cameras on top of the device to allow the user to gain access to the information on those devices or to transfer data into those devices. It can also detect a glass placed on on top of it, allowing the Surface device to display animation or even display a menu of wine choices. Credit cards can also be placed on top of the Surface device allowing one to pay for their bill without the need to call the waiter.

Touchscreen technology has also reached the gaming console world. With the release of the Nintendo DS, gamers were immersed in an all new gameplay style that was never before experienced in other devices of its kind. This allowed game programmers to design games with more innovation which would be impossible to create with traditional game input mainly in the form of the joystick and buttons.

And this is just the beginning. The number of touchscreen devices are only bound to get larger in the coming years. As demand for such devices have increased considerably this year, more and more companies have started to put forward their own offerings. While Apple still leads the pack in the touchscreen cellphone and media player markets via their iPhone and iTouch products, other cellphone companies are closely behind with their own offerings.

Cellphones you may want to consider when purchasing a touchscreen phone, are:

  • Apple iPhone 3G
  • Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
  • Samsung Omnia SGH-i900
  • HTC Touch HD
  • LG KP500 Cookie

If you are looking for a touchscreen PC on the other hand, you may want to check out the HP TouchSmart. It features multi-touch similar to what the iPhone and Microsoft Surface has. And as demonstrated by Microsoft, it works beautifully well with their upcoming Windows 7 operating system which should replace Windows Vista in the near future.

Truly, the touchscreen revolution in gadgets and devices is nigh! Once the price of the devices come down to levels that are more affordable to the common person, it is not impossible that there will come a time that all devices will have an interactive touchscreen as a standard method for input.
