Well here are some tips for the interview desk, explaining there are some typical questions that you shouldn’t ask first in any circumstances. Let the interviewer give you some hint, then only shoot your questions. Here they are.

Do not ask about salary first

This is a major mistake often seen among the youngsters and fresh candidates at the interview desk. Many youngsters join jobs, especially easy to get through kind of jobs just because of salary attraction. What they fail to see is that the company is hiring them for some good reasons of its profit, not to do charity. All that interest them is salary package. Often such candidates turn really impatient and just cannot wait till the interviewer asks him or her about expected salary package. Such candidate looks for an opportunity and whenever the interviewer is found little quiet, soon shoots questions like ‘How much are you planning to pay for this job?’ or ‘What will be my salary package if I am chosen for it?’ Well, such questions may not only irritate the interviewer, you may also lose chance to impress him forever. Ask about salary package only when the interviewer gives you come hint or asks you directly about your expected salary figure. Too much proactive effort from your side will invariably send wrong messages across.

Do not ask about the company’s background first

Do not forget, it is you who is being interviewed; not the person sitting across the table. Maintain interview decorum. Too much of interest and questions may make you appear too bossy, picky and irritating. It is good if you have queries in store for the interviewer, it is always appreciated. But shooting such questions at the wrong time may spoil your entire effort. Shoot all questions you have regarding the company background or places of operation or anything specific about the job profile – only when you are asked. The interviewer may specifically ask you ‘Do you have any questions to ask?’ and that time you can shoot your questions. If you are not asked, towards end of the interview process you may proactively ask some questions. But keep it short. Make sure questions are sensible, smart, logical and not personal.

Do not ask personal questions

Often the interviewer makes the candidate feel relaxed, at ease and comfortable. Interviewer may crack some jokes, share light moments to see how you are exactly behind the shield of formal attire. But such atmosphere doesn’t permit you to forget all interview decorum and get personal. Even if the situation is light hearted do not suddenly get personal and shoot questions like ‘Sir, what does your name mean?’ or ‘Madam how many years you have been working in this company?’ Such abrupt questions may instantly make the interviewer feel uncomfortable

Follow these tips and do not make a mistake being proactive at the interview desk.

Why Should You Go for Voice Chat on Internet? http://itlist.com/why-should-you-go-for-voice-chat-on-internet/ http://itlist.com/why-should-you-go-for-voice-chat-on-internet/#comments Sat, 10 Sep 2011 03:47:20 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=3064 These days everybody is on Internet, right from a 5 year old kid to a 60 year old man. Internet has spread its awe all over and voice chat is one of its finest virtues of Internet. Voice chat has made communication process way easier, convenient and cost saving. If you are still frowning at its benefits, here are some of its benefits for your knowledge.

Save phone bills

When the heart goes fonder and lovers just can’t stay away from talking to each other for hours, what could be better than voice chat and that too free of cost? All you need is an Internet connection besides headphone and microphone. You need not worry about long hours of telephonic conversations, long distance calls and horrifying bill at the end of the month. Voice chat has bridged the gap between distant lands. Not only for lovers, it is extremely good communication device for business work, job interviews, technical help, customer care services, making friends online, communicating with friends and family. If you have a webcam, you can even see the person while talking. That’s like a cherry on the cake.

Work while talking

Voice chats involve you, but not your hands. While you keep doing voice chat, you can still continue doing other works like typing, checking mails, text chatting with others etc. Unlike phone conversation or text chat your hands are absolutely free to work on anything. Voice chats can increase your productivity, efficiency besides strengthening your communication process.

Group talking

People not only indulge into one to one conversation, but also interact in group. Yes, you can invite multiple users to join in a voice chat and all of you can interact together, at the same time. Group chat can be extremely fun while connecting with old college group of friends and when all are settled in distant places. It can be a real fun session. When employees are at distant places it’s easier for the leader to get all on voice chat and clarify work at the same time to avoid ambiguity and confusion. Group voice chat will save your both time and money of calling individuals separately and clarifying work.

Long distance work

Voice chats have opened avenues for freelance writers, designers, website programmers, and other freelance work aspirants since people need not meet face to face to get work or submit the same. It is true globalization. People all across the world can work with each other, without even knowing each other personally. 3 Job Interview Tips for Busy Professionals http://itlist.com/3-job-interview-tips-for-busy-professionals/ http://itlist.com/3-job-interview-tips-for-busy-professionals/#comments Sat, 16 Oct 2010 18:16:00 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/3-job-interview-tips-for-busy-professionals/ Most of the articles I read on the topic of job interviews are targeted towards either an absolute fresher, or to someone who is going through a career crisis. And every time I see any such article, I found myself asking what about the regular folks who want to switch job for better salary and better opportunity? And in one of those moments, I decided to write this article that will help regular employed people to effectively search for a decent job that pays more salary than what they are drawing now.

Do not schedule any important meeting on the interview day

This is to be done to stop you from messing up either of the two, and to keep your mind uncluttered on the very day. An important meeting scheduled on the day of interview will engross a significant part of your thinking brain, which will distract you during the interview as well. You should, therefore, avoid scheduling anything important on the interview day.

Do not use office mail for communication

I know you follow this, but still I felt like telling you that never ever use the e-mail ID given by your company to schedule or fix a meeting. This could spell bad luck for your existing job, which I presume you do not want to lose, unless you get something solid on hand.

Negotiate as much as you can

The best part of searching for a new job when you already have one is the fact that you can bargain with the prospective employer from a position of strength. Unlike a fresher who needs a job then and there, you do not have that urgency as you already have a job. You should, therefore, try to get the job on your terms. This is very much possible.

Being already employed, you already know the tricks of an interview meeting, so I left them out of this article, and instead mentioned those that are relevant for you alone, and not for a fresher. You must put these tips in use.

Criteria for Selection of an Ideal Job http://itlist.com/criteria-for-selection-of-an-ideal-job/ http://itlist.com/criteria-for-selection-of-an-ideal-job/#comments Sun, 22 Aug 2010 17:40:00 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/criteria-for-selection-of-an-ideal-job/ Just a job offer is not enough at times. Even if we manage to crack many job interviews we choose the best one. Unfortunately we often make a hasty decision and end up judging a job just on the basis of good salary package. That’s definitely one very important criteria of job selection, but not the only factor. There are many factors to be considered before making any decision. They are discussed below.

Location of the office

Location of your work place is one very important criteria of job selection. If one doesn’t have own conveyance and depends solely on public transports; one has to consider the distance from the workplace, means of communication and the cost it incurs. Public transport again helps in saving money spent on gas and time wasted in traffic. Location in a poor area may threaten the female employees.

Perks

Alluring perks always attract employees. Perks like gym within the office campus, day care centers for babies, swimming pool, company provided car naturally attract all. Perks also come with position and experience. Interact with the Human Resource team to know about the perks offered.

Growth and Increment

Even a fat salary package seems inadequate over a couple of years of time. At the age of 20 the salary package which seems irresistible, appear convincingly inadequate at the age of 30. That’s the irony of salary package. A job which doesn’t offer much scope of growth and annual increments isn’t attractive to its employees. It’s like a mundane job, which no one wishes to stick to for long. Not only in terms of money; but one needs to scrutinize the opportunity for growth, hierarchy within the organization and delegation of duties and responsibilities to its employees.

Work environment

One should also scrutinize the work environment. Is it a very loud place or quiet? Is the environment casual or formal and strict? Are people cooperative and friendly or very judgmental and formal? Is the work culture very nice or quite ordinary and cheap? Does the company consider about employees’ comfort and space required or is it very suffocating? Is it a safe place for women? Such factors definitely affect productivity and mental peace.

Job security

Job security is a big concern for the employees. Younger employees may not need to worry about it, but family men definitely need to check it. Is the job safe and what does its past track record says? Do your research. Check the company’s market share, reputations, strength, frequency of vacancies advertised etc. Employees should ask questions related to the job security during interview session.

Do what keeps you happy

Get into a job which delivers maximum job satisfaction and is close to your heart. Even if the job is not very money making, your love for it could keep you happy for life. If you are passionate artist you can’t be happy for life in a banking job. Do what keeps you happy and satisfied. That’s a key to success.

A Job-Search Guide to Help People Over 45 – XV http://itlist.com/a-job-search-guide-to-help-people-over-45-%e2%80%93-xv/ http://itlist.com/a-job-search-guide-to-help-people-over-45-%e2%80%93-xv/#comments Sun, 28 Feb 2010 03:56:24 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/a-job-search-guide-to-help-people-over-45-%e2%80%93-xv/ Personal meeting and job interviews are not the places where you can hide your age. It is simply not possible. So, why to try! And as it is so far in the series we have seen why you should play your age, and not try to hide it. But, one thing that may concern you during the interview is the age, not yours, but of the people around you, of the person taking your interview, and of the people with whom you have to work. Let’s see how you should deal with it.

Age should not matter

Neither yours nor your interview’s age should matter to you when you are on the interview table. The chances are quite realistic that your interviewer will be much younger than you. Do not get unnerved by that. Be calm and give him the respect you gave to your older interviewer when you were young. Treat anyone on the interviewer’s chair with respect.

Convey your desire to work with younger crowd

One of the main concerns of an employer hiring an older person is the new employee’s ability to mix with the young crowd. Make it clear to the interviewer that you do not have any problem in working with young people. Working with young people, particularly getting managed by them doesn’t go well with everyone. Many do not like to get managed by someone who is less experienced then him. You should make this clear to your employer that you do not belong from that group.

During your interview, you need to convey to your employer that you have the desire to keep up with younger crowd, and you are willing to learn new technologies and new way of doing things so that you could succeed. Do not forget to ask about the prospect of success in the organization you are being interviewed for.

A Job-Search Guide to Help People Over 45 – VII http://itlist.com/a-job-search-guide-to-help-people-over-45-%e2%80%93-vii/ http://itlist.com/a-job-search-guide-to-help-people-over-45-%e2%80%93-vii/#comments Sun, 07 Feb 2010 03:26:31 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2284 You have tried everything from being cool to begin smart to playing your age to hiding it. You even tried offering discounts and accepting cuts, but have you tried your connections?

Yes, I am taking about connections. Personal connections. If you do not believe it works then come over and see what I have to show to you. In this article, you will see how connection plays a role in getting you the job you deserve, and almost the pay you deserve—well, almost because you may have to give in for pay cut. So, let’s get started.

Give everything

Are you wondering how this topic made it connection part of the series? Well, it shouldn’t but I am mentioning it near the top of this post because giving your 100% is required. It is not an option, not anymore; you have to do it. Give everything you got to convince employer of your eligibility, and your connections of your suitability for the job you are asking recommendation. Do not hold anything back.

Use your personal connection

Back in your youth when you were working, you worked with many individuals: you worked for some people, you worked with some people, and some people worked for you. If you are not D.B. Ross who intimidated everyone working with him, I am pretty darn sure that you got some connections that are still in the business. Ask them for help. They certainly will help you out. You can even ask people whom you knew but never worked with for leads and job interviews. It will go a long way.

Talk to your ex-employers

Ex-employers are the people whom you worked for in the heyday of your career. These people knew you will go places, and these people will understand that you have lost a job not because of your ability—because they have witnessed your work themselves—but because of something else. They will pop their hands out and pull you onboard. They will do it even if you were not such an extraordinary employee. They will do it just because they have known you for so many years, and they believe that you will not let them down.

These three tips will play a critical role in getting you the job you need.

Making The Most Of A Second Interview http://itlist.com/making-the-most-of-a-second-interview/ http://itlist.com/making-the-most-of-a-second-interview/#comments Thu, 12 Nov 2009 21:50:25 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1970 Job interviews are like chess matches.  Both of you are trying to get a feel for each other, and you’re trying to make enough of a good impression to win the battle.  Getting a second interview is your first victory.  Having a second interview means they’re interested.  That also means you’ll really have the chance to sell yourself, and guarantee you’ll get the job.

The second interview is less about checking your qualifications, and more about seeing if you’re the right fit for the job.  You’ve already been confirmed as a good candidate by making it this far.  In the second interview you’ll face tougher, and more involved questions.  The best way to handle these is to stay true to yourself.  Be the same person you were in the first interview.

The worst strategy you could have is to try and handle the interview differently.  You’ve gotten a second interview because the interviewer saw something in you.  Don’t cover that up by being a different person, or else you won’t make the best impression.  Instead be the polite, confident, and assured person that showed up the first time around.

Whatever research you’ve done about the company before, go over it again.  Know your stuff as well as possible, because the questions are going to be tougher.  Only by having the information can you respond to the best of your ability.  Quick concise responses are key here, showing your comfort and ability just by talking.

Make sure to show how you can contribute to the company, and compliment them on aspects you appreciate.  There’s reason you want this job, besides the paycheck.  Find that and play off of those reasons.  Make your skill set work for what you want from the company.  That makes you into an ideal employee, and helps you shine in your second interview.

Job Interview: Stepping Stone to Success http://itlist.com/job-interview-stepping-stone-to-success/ http://itlist.com/job-interview-stepping-stone-to-success/#comments Sun, 31 May 2009 16:19:17 +0000 IT List http://itlist.com/?p=1369 A job interview is one such process which can make or break your career. It is highly imperative that at any point of time you are prepared to face an interview that determines your next step to a successful career. The interview process can be thrilling, informative, stressful or pleasant depending totally on your preparation. Ideally job interview is a fantastic opportunity for you to showcase the best of your skill sets in a congenial and humble manner. This is one place where your employer makes an initial impression about your skill sets, behavior, personality and much more so it’s very important to make yourself as presentable as possible. One must always armor himself with the weapon of knowledge to face any job interview. A job interview is one such place where you and your employer can get to know each other. I’m going to provide you with an overview of the different types of job interviews that are conducted normally in any corporate scenario:

  • Screening interview: This is a preliminary stage in any interview process. This is a rather informal and initial step in any formal interview process and it is conducted by the human resource department in any organization. It can be on a one-to-one basis or telephonic or video conferencing as per the norms followed by the firm. In a screening interview, it is determined whether the employee possesses the minimum skills required to undertake the job role.
  • Selection job interview: Here the candidate for job interview is called for personal interviews several times by different people in the management cadre to assess whether he possesses the desired personality traits required either to manage a team or to handle stress related tasks on job.
  • Group interview: In this form of job interview many job candidates are interviewed at once to assess their leadership skills.
  • Panel type job interview: In this form of interview, a single job candidate is interviewed by several employers in the panel at once. This is to check whether the candidate is calm or gets intimidated. The best solution is to stay calm and strive to answer questions of each panel member in a confident, assertive and positive tone while maintaining eye contact.
  • Stress Interview: This is the most difficult form of interview. Employees resort to this mode of interview to assess whether the candidate can handle stress situations which may sometimes be adversities of unimaginable nature.
