But very few of us have a good memory. Some are born, blessed with it; whereas the rest cultivate it. Whatever be the process, we all cherish if we carry a good memory. Here are some tips, which can boost memory power.

Divide and remember

At times it’s very difficult to remember names and numbers if they are too long like 9910288479 or Padmaramaswamigovardhan. What you can do is divide these numbers and words into parts and remember them effectively. Like, 99-102-88-479 or Padma-rama-swami-govar-dhan. All you have to do is divide the words or numbers into smaller parts and remembering them in bits and pieces. Breaking them and grouping few together always works. Try it.

Rhyming

Rhyming helps especially when it comes to memorizing names, words or phrases. It not only helps in memorizing, but also makes one creative and increases power of vocabulary. There can also be words which sound similar but carry different meanings like Rome/Roam, Scene/Seen.

Pen down whatever you wish to remember

It’s often said writing makes things memorable and perfect. It’s true. If you tend to forget things, try to jot them down. You will not only remember things, but also your spelling gets better. Try to write many times. It will help you to remember. Carry the writing with you or make sure it’s on the wall before you so that you see it many times. Seeing will make you believe in it and remember it.

Recall and recite it before going to bed

Before you go to sleep at night, recall whatever you were supposed to remember. Recite things and also plan what you have to do next day. In sleep, our mind arranges things, synchronizes into a meaningful and systematic way; making things easier to remember.

Relax

Don’t panic if you tend to forget things. Don’t try too hard to recall. Take it easy. Rather relax and don’t try. When you are relaxing, things will automatically come to your mind and pop up in memory. If you are anxious, stressed or too worried to recall, you tend to forget even more.

Mediate and exercise

Meditation early in the morning, followed by some light exercises not only keeps one fit, but also soothes nerves, mind, body and soul. A relaxed mind stays calm and remembers more.

Practice these and see the difference.

Structure of a Cover Letter http://itlist.com/structure-of-a-cover-letter/ http://itlist.com/structure-of-a-cover-letter/#comments Fri, 08 Jan 2010 02:12:04 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2163 In the last post, we talked about the importance of a cover letter, and how much it can assist in getting an interview call. In this short article, I will talk about anatomy of a cover letter; about how one should go about crafting a cover letter.

Anatomy of a cover letter

Step 1: length of a cover letter

A cover letter should not be more than one page long, and when I say “page” I mean “A4 size page”. Subdivide your cover letter into 3 paragraphs, and try to keep the cover letter within 350-400 words. The goal of your cover letter is to generate interest in the reader not to chock him to death with your uncontrolled biographical rattling.

Step 2: Name and address

Put name and address of recipient at the top on the left-hand side of the cover letter, and fold the cover letter putting names and address at the top.

Step 3: Use proper salutation

Do not begin your cover letter with “To Whom It May Concern” as it will not concern anyone. Find the name of the person you are sending your résumé, and use his second name (family name) as salutation as in Dear Mr. Jones, or Dear Ms. Lloyd. If you fail to get name of the person who will read your cover letter than you can simply write Dear Sir/Madam.

Step 4: 1st paragraph

Being this paragraph with writing why you want to work with the company followed by giving a brief introduction about yourself and talk about the academic qualification you have in brief (of course, I am assuming here that you fresher looking for your first job). Do not tell the reader everything you know. Say only as much as required to garner interest.

Step 5: 2nd paragraph

The second paragraph of your cover letter should consist of the things you learned while pursuing your highest degree, the degree on the basis of which you are applying for the job. Mention 5 to 7 key concepts that are relevant to the industry. Talk about cutting edge things that you learned.

Step 6: 3rd paragraph

Write how you can add value to the organization if you are hired. Just use 2-3 sentences to explain this.

Conclusion

You should sound confident while writing a cover letter, but avoid sound overconfident. You should sound sincere in seeking employment but never sound begging. It’s not good for health and morale. Be professional and sound like one. No one cares how you got that stain on your shoes. They just do not like stains.

How to Use Twitter to Get Clients http://itlist.com/how-to-use-twitter-to-get-clients/ http://itlist.com/how-to-use-twitter-to-get-clients/#comments Mon, 04 Jan 2010 03:02:12 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2149 Twitter is an amazing tool. It can be put to any number of uses. People use it to make friends, to know about the topics they care, to get job alerts, to stay on top of any topic, to get recommendation, to read funny jokes, and to get influenced by memorable quotations, etc. This 140-character wonder can even be used to get clients for your business, regardless of your size, be it for your one-person startup, or for a 1000-people big company.

In this article, we will see what you need to do to get clients from twitter.

Step 1: Use real name

Will you like to do business with sexykitten, or hotrode? I am sure you won’t, regardless of how smart hotrode or sexykitten is. This is the power of name. A good name creates a positive image, whereas, a bad name ruins the party. Use your real name or business name for the twitter profile. If your name or business name is already taken then use something close to that, but spare yourself the horror of bad names.

Step 2: Use real picture

Like a real name, a real picture helps create a positive image in the mind of onlookers. Do not go for cool looking cartoons, or any other thing. Let your prospect know that you are a real person behind the twitter profile by giving a real picture.

Step 3: Brand your background

If you do not know this then let me break the good news that you can brand your twitter profile the way you want. I will suggest you customize the background of your twitter profile with your corporate brand identity.

Step 4: Use compelling bio

Your one-line twitter bio says a lot about you. People get influenced reading that, so it better be good. Make your twitter bio forceful and SEO-friendly.

Step 5: Add URL

Many people leave URL field empty. Do not commit this mistake. Use a proper working URL in your profile. This will work as a door to your website.

Step 6: Create a list

Create a list of the tweets from your industry and make it publicly available. This will give your prospect an idea about how closely you follow the changes in your industry. He may regard you as a leader of the pack, which will mean more business for you.

Tyranny of the Market and the Power of Positioning http://itlist.com/tyranny-of-the-market-and-the-power-of-positioning/ http://itlist.com/tyranny-of-the-market-and-the-power-of-positioning/#comments Sat, 06 Jun 2009 19:17:16 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=1380 Jack trout and Al Ries are the names behind arguably the most powerful marketing concept of all time, positioning. Positioning, since the beginning, has become the uniting force behind all the marketing and related activities undertaken by any company to promote its brand or brands. Defined in the simplest of terms, positioning is the battle of mindshare. Positioning refers to the place that a brand has occupied in the mind of its target audience vis-à-vis competition.

As the definition suggest, positioning can only be done in reference to other brands present in the market. If there is no other brand in the market you are serving, you do not need to position your brand. If you are the only player in the market then the entire market is yours, but as soon as the second player enters the market, you need to convey your buyer about the benefits, the brand attributes, brand  personality, brand standing in the market, and the value your brand deliver. You needed to differentiate your brand because you do not want to confuse your customer. If you fail to differentiate, your customers will not buy from you. You need to give your customers the reason to buy as no one likes to do business with a me-too company.

There are many ways to position a brand in the market, and which strategy you will choose depends not only on the nature of the brand but it also depends upon the nature of the competitors as well as the available slot in the mind of the consumer.

The concept of positioning is as applicable for the online products as it is for a product sold in your local supermarket. Both are vying for the customer’s attention, which is getting scarcer. In the today’s world of hyper-competition, just positioning your brand on any attribute will not fetch much result. To get a substantial result, you need to power-position your brand. You need to explore and express the connect between your brand and the customer’s mindset. This can only be done if you are aware of the customer’s changing need. While saying so, I assumed you already have a thorough understanding of your brand. If this is not true then your work should begin with understanding your brand, and finding the community that is more likely to swear by it. If you have a really good product then finding this key will not be difficult, but if you are just another brand in the category, I will suggest changing the business or building a key differentiation in your brand.

Consumers are hyper-active these days. If social bookmarking and social networking have made it easier for you to reach your customer then these services also minimized the distance between two customers. You should keep this in mind, while attempting any trick on your customers. It could mark the end for your brand.

Techie Advice | How to Find the Perfect Domain Name! http://itlist.com/techie-advice-how-to-find-the-perfect-domain-name/ http://itlist.com/techie-advice-how-to-find-the-perfect-domain-name/#comments Wed, 25 Feb 2009 14:33:04 +0000 resourceful http://itlist.com/?p=912 You shouldn’t bother buying a domain name from some fellow in an auction who happens to own the first word association that pops into your mind. Instead of handing over a large amount of money, why not invest in some time to think it over? Although choosing the best domain name for your website may seem difficult, the best techie advice would suggest you automate your process, which could be as simple as submitting a search on words ending in -us!

I am sure you’ve heard of de.li.cio.us. It redirects to delicious.com, but as a .us domain and social bookmarking site, I can’t help thinking that their creativity was first sparked from the lack of interesting domain names available. If you can take something short and to the point from your search on word navigator, your next step would be to check it’s availability. The following guidelines can speed up the process:

  • Since there are 3,563 words that end in -us at the time of this posting, the easiest thing to do would be to copy and paste each list (by length) into a text document, which took me about 7 minutes. You probably won’t take as long, if you copy and paste only half of all the words.
  • In the document, click Edit and Select All. Proceed to toggle the bullets off. Then use Ctrl+F and type us into the search box. Click on Find All. You will notice that the -us ending has been selected for all of the words. Now click on Replace All. Your document should no longer have any of the -us endings.
  • If your document is 75 pages long, perhaps it would be best to weed out words before continuing. Or you can copy and paste the words in only chunks (maybe 30 words) at a time into this domain name regristration search (clicking on the us extension, while unselecting the com extension), so that your internet browser doesn’t freeze up during the process.

Of the first thirty words I submitted, 14 were available. Here is my example chunk with unavailable .us domain names crossed out:

fagaceo.us furacio.us
felonio.us furfuro.us
feracio.us garrulo.us
ferocio.us gingero.us
fervoro.us glaireo.us
filaceo.us glamoro.us
flavoro.us globulo.us
fractio.us gluteno.us
frivolo.us glutino.us
froufro.us granulo.us
fugacio.us gummato.us
fulgoro.us gumptio.us
fulguro.us hazardo.us
fulmino.us hilario.us

Honestly, if I were a business looking for an attractive and modern domain name, gumptio.us would be my first pick! If you don’t know, gumptious is an adjective that means enterprising (synonym to energetic, industrious, up-and-coming). Or how about furacio.us? Hurry up, domain names like these will soon fill up the Web 2.0 (or is it 3.0) scene! If you really don’t care what the domain name is and just want to set something up quickly, your best bet would be to submit one or two words into a domain name suggestion tool.
