Mistakes to Avoid While Writing Resume http://itlist.com/mistakes-to-avoid-while-writing-resume/ http://itlist.com/mistakes-to-avoid-while-writing-resume/#comments Thu, 24 Feb 2011 16:47:00 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/mistakes-to-avoid-while-writing-resume/ We all know how to write a resume, but what many of us don’t know are the mistakes that we often commit while crafting a resume. There are many mistakes which silently creep into our resume and stay there for long. We may not notice them always, but recruiters do. Such mistakes expose unprofessionalism, carelessness. Make sure you avoid these mistakes.

Long resume

We often make our resumes unnecessarily long stretched over pages. Always remember, an ideal resume should not be more than two pages. For fresher or junior employees pages shouldn’t be more than one and half page. Unless you are into profession for more than 15 years and head superior positions like Managing director, CEO your resume shouldn’t be too long. Make it crisp, compact yet all inclusive.

Random

We often write things randomly, without maintaining order. An ideal resume should never be clumsy in terms of order of happenings in your life. As for example, state your present job on the top, followed by the earlier one, followed by the one before that and ending work experience column with the first job of your life. Same rule goes for other sections like academic qualification. Always mention latest happening first, followed by the earlier ones. It helps the recruiter know what you are doing in present.

Informal email addresses

It’s often seen applicants don’t take resume much seriously and treat it as an informal affair. People often put informal email addresses on their resume like – [email protected] or [email protected]. They show immaturity and casual approach of the applicant. Make a formal email account which sounds formal, containing your name or initials and use the same for all job applications.

Alignment

People often commit the mistake regarding alignment of text. People often put text in center alignment. It jeopardizes balance. Put every text towards left of the page, including name and contact information on the top.

Paragraphs

To convey maximum information people are often tempted to write in paragraphs. Don’t do it, it’s dangerous. No one likes to read paragraphs. Put all information in short bullet points or break into points with enough space in between to show distinction of the points. Write in small crisp sentences while conveying all important information like – name of course, name of institute, place, percentage, year of passing.

Once you control these mistakes, your resume can get even better.

More reasons for Why Should you Read Books http://itlist.com/more-reasons-for-why-should-you-read-books/ http://itlist.com/more-reasons-for-why-should-you-read-books/#comments Mon, 27 Dec 2010 04:35:43 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2789 In continuation to the past topic of importance of reading books, here are some more reasons regarding why you should read books more often.

Best infotainment

Book reading unlike other modes of entertainment isn’t a dumb medium of entertainment, it’s extremely enriching as you constantly learn and grow while reading a book. It’s more of a infotainment medium.

De-stress yourself

Reading is a great medium of relaxing and reducing stress. After a hectic day at work and personal problems a good book definitely helps to unwind, relax and de-stress. Lie in the hammock under tree or on the armchair under sun and read. You will find yourself in a great relaxed mood.

Self-discipline

Through reading you can self-discipline yourself and cultivate a good habit. Make reading your daily habit. Invest at least half an hour in reading, it will tame your aggressive mood and discipline you. You will soon give up many unwanted addictions like watching too much of television, browsing Internet and wasting money in shopping.

Source of new ideas

Book reading may help you to come up with new ideas. Reading definitely gives vent to imagination power, helping an individual to think freely and come across absolutely fresh unconventional ideas. It will help you in your profession field to implement new ideas. While reading many new ideas may crop up in your mind. It will also help you to nurture fresh ideas while delivering a speech or sharing thoughts with friends and family.

Save money for learning new things

Generally learning new skills and techniques like Chinese cooking, party make up, sweater weaving and many other jobs require spending lot of money and time in training. But reading such tips and methods is not only money and time saving, but also stays with you forever for future reference. You need not hire any professional to learn. Read and learn when you want to.

Future reference and pass along value

There are many sources of learning like television, audio, Internet, seminars and speeches – but most of them are only one time watch or listening medium, devoid of long life.  But reading a book is the only habit, which has future reference value. You can read it again and again in future whenever needed or pass along to your friends and family. Thus reading offers long term benefit.

Now what are you waiting for? Start reading, today.

Is Writing Really Fun? http://itlist.com/is-writing-really-fun/ http://itlist.com/is-writing-really-fun/#comments Fri, 19 Mar 2010 03:31:04 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/is-writing-really-fun/ No. It is not.

Writing is hard work. Go and ask anyone who is in the business for long and he or she will tell you what a drag this is. As they say it, “The worst part of writing career is to sit still on your desk and write.”

Writing never comes easy, no matter at what stage you are into your writing career. It will never come easy. It takes time, effort, and pushing from your side. Do not assume that someone just sits on the desk and starts stroking keys and articles or books or reports or whatever starts forming itself. It never happens this way. To draw an analogy, let me tell you that writing is akin to polishing gold necklace—it required time, determination, precision, attention to details, and ability to continue even when your mind is saying “F” Word out loud.

I have been long enough in this field to realize this. Initially, I was delusional. I thought it will come easy to me as I am into this since I was a kid is class 3rd. But, as I wrote I was delusional.

Should you take up writing?

Indeed, you should. If writing is tough then what is not? Nothing is easy. You will have to exert yourself in everything that you do. But there is one thing about writing that none of the profession shares, at least not in the essence that writing does.

Writing creates a world, where you are in control of what each of your words will do. But, still your readers are in control. As it is upon them to make whatever sense they want from the writing. Writing is a game being played between the minds of the writer, readers and everything that falls in between.

This indeed makes writing fun.

Yes. Writing is fun. In the truest sense of the word, not in the sense that mean no work all play.

Is the Worry About Loneliness Stopping Your From Becoming a Successful Freelance Writer? http://itlist.com/is-the-worry-about-loneliness-stopping-your-from-becoming-a-successful-freelance-writer/ http://itlist.com/is-the-worry-about-loneliness-stopping-your-from-becoming-a-successful-freelance-writer/#comments Wed, 27 Jan 2010 03:33:29 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2254 Writing is a lonesome journey, freelance writing is doubly so. You need to know this before you embark on the freelance writing train. The feeling of being alone is not very welcomed by many people, and this is one of the reasons that not everyone opt for this profession. Even those who are comfortable with sitting alone staring at the glaring screen feel the compunction of choosing this career, at times. Such is the effect of loneliness.

But, there is a way out. You do not need to keep on staring on your computer screen, incessantly, for every waking hours; I understand that it cannot be avoided at times, but you can try. In the following paragraph you will see how you can add human interaction in the equation.

Talk to your client on phone

Occasionally, calling up your client is the first thing you need to do in order to break the loneliness. Your client may not entertain frequent calls, but occasional calls will get due respect. He will be happy to answer your questions on phone. Discussing issues on phone will help you understand client’s need more precisely, but never overdo it; no one goes to work just to be on call with service providers. Call only if you must, or at max twice a week, and for rest of the time, stick to emails.

Build an online network

You must have heard this umpteenth number of time, and you must have got frustrated listening to this networking s@#t, but let me emphasize it one more time because it is very, very important. Forming a network of freelance writers will not only help you secure more gigs, but it will also help you break the monotony of freelance writing life. You can use this network to talk and share ideas and discuss issues. This can be akin to chat near virtual water cooler.

Go to café to write

For long, coffee house has been used by writers to craft their literary work. Why do not you try this alternative? You will be midst people doing different things. Who knows, you may get an idea for your novel! Nevertheless, it will help break the loneliness.

What else do you think can be done to break the monotony of freelance writing? Let’s see what all comes on the table.

What Lie Are You Telling Yourself to Avoid Freelance Writing? http://itlist.com/what-lie-are-you-telling-yourself-to-avoid-freelance-writing/ http://itlist.com/what-lie-are-you-telling-yourself-to-avoid-freelance-writing/#comments Sat, 12 Dec 2009 23:01:31 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2086 Many people cherish this desire to take freelancing as profession, but not all of them end up taking this as a career. Not because they did not have writing ability, but because they are sold to self-beguiling lies.

Lie Number 1: Do not have time

This is the most common lie people tell themselves. I often hear people say that after a work it is hard to take time out for writing. This lie is preceded and supported by the fact that they cannot leave their job because the family needs food on the table. Indeed, your family needs your support, so you should not quit your day job, but it has nothing to do with the lie of “not having enough time” that you fool yourself in believing.

Dare to ask people and you will be amazed to find how many people are taking 2 hours each day from their life for part-time freelance writing. This is worth the effort. If you cannot do it daily or on alternate days than stick to weekend-only routine, but do it. Start now and soon you will see the difference.

Lie Number 2: Words, empty words

Well words are important for we freelancers, but words not backed by action ends up being empty words. And empty words do no good to anyone. I know many people who speak volume, but when it comes to taking action, they are just not there. Start writing, do not just speak about starting to write.

Lie Number 3: Excuses, colorful excuses

From not having time, to not having money to not having enough space at home to make it a workstation, there are many lies that people tell themselves. These lies are colorful, and at times have vivid details, nevertheless, it’s a lie.

The time to start freelance writing is now. There will not be any other good time, nor will you ever have more money than you have today to start freelancing, nor will you have enough space to do that. For those who sell themselves lie, there will not be any opportunity.

Are You a Freelance Writer, Do You Know How to Fight Distraction? http://itlist.com/are-you-a-freelance-writer-do-you-know-how-to-fight-distraction/ http://itlist.com/are-you-a-freelance-writer-do-you-know-how-to-fight-distraction/#comments Sat, 05 Dec 2009 02:11:11 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2057 For a freelance writer, it is quite easy to get distracted because he works from home. For the large part of the day, people in our home keep either talking or watching television, which never fails to distract us. This is frustrating, which further sucks away our productivity.

How to avoid it?

Fortunately, there is a way out of it, which anyone of you can use to avoid distraction, regardless of your situation.

Assign yourself a place of work

This is the must-take action for any freelance writer. It is not good to carry your laptop and sit anywhere in your home to work, well occasional working-in-kitchen will not hurt but do not make it a routine. I know it sounds against the spirit of freelance writing—you can work from anywhere and anytime—but this is worth a deviation. Find a lonely corner in your house and turn it into a workplace.

Fix your work hours

I may sound like talking against the freedom of freelance writing, but my intention is not to drag you back into the 9-5 job that you left in the past, it is only to help you produce more. And as it is you can anytime pull the string and call it off.

Work, no matter what

Once you fix your work hour, you should stick to it, no matter what. Well, you can deviate from “no matter what” principle without any guilt feeling when you know you need to. Occasion deviation never hurts, at least not in our profession.

Talk to your family

At times, getting things write just need a word from us. Talk to your family and tell them that you are working around here, so not to create distraction. Well this might not work with a disgruntled spouse, but in most of the cases, this will be enough. Believe it or not, they understand the value of the work you are doing.

As you can see, fighting off distraction does not take so much of muscle power as much it takes discipline and tactics. What are your tactics to fight this monster off? Use the comment box and tell me your strategies.

Why Not to Become a Writer http://itlist.com/why-not-to-become-a-writer/ http://itlist.com/why-not-to-become-a-writer/#comments Thu, 29 Oct 2009 00:30:08 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=1902 Writing is easy, and you get instant recognition doing, isn’t it? Wrong! Freelance writing is anything but easy, and it is not a way to get instant recognition; if you are in it for this then look somewhere else, you have knocked a wrong door. In this post, I will tell you why and when you should not take writing as a career. You should not take writing as a career if:

You want to get rich quick

If anyone told you that writing is the quickest way to amass millions then he has made fool of you. Chances are that you may not ever be able to amass millions doing this. Not everyone who picks pen or strokes keys become millionaire.

You want an overnight success

If the bank balance and fame of J. K. Rowling have pulled you into this career then give it a second thought. This is not a profession where you become a superstar in one night. Ms. Rowling never became one in one night. She worked hard to achieve what she got, and many, I mean countless many, even never get half her success despite double her effort.

You want to sign a deal soon

Do not kid yourself in believing that you will land in a five-book contract as soon as your first book release. Getting a book deal or even a smaller gig is not an easy task. It takes days, if not months to get the first gig. If you are fortunate, you will get it quickly.

You believe you are the best

Writing career is not for you if you have paranormal self-esteem. Rejections are rule in writing, and if you cannot deal with countless rejections then do not join the party. You will be censured even when you are right. You need to have thick skin to survive here.

You cannot manage everything on your own

As a writer, you will have to do many things on your own.  It means it will be you only who will be fixing a meeting, pitching your idea, selling your idea, executing your idea, and handling finance. Do not think that you will get a literary agent or a manager from the day one.

If you do not demand any of these then welcome aboard, writing is fun and exciting.

10 Everyday Tips to Increase your freelance Earnings http://itlist.com/10-everyday-tips-to-increase-your-freelance-earnings/ http://itlist.com/10-everyday-tips-to-increase-your-freelance-earnings/#comments Mon, 03 Aug 2009 03:35:29 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/10-everyday-tips-to-increase-your-freelance-earnings/ Do not get mislead by the title, I am not going to share any magic tips or rather there is no magic tips, tricks or shortcuts. Nothing can substitute hard work, but if the work is done in a proper way, and in the right direction then the magnitude of the return will make the effort look less strenuous.

In this article, I will share some tips that will help freelance writer in increasing his or her earning potential.

Tip 1

Introduce yourself: No one will know who you are until you will tell them who you are, and the best way to do that for a freelance writer is to write a compelling introductory paragraph that can be sent to prospects.

Tip 2

Article marketing: If you are a freelance writer, chances are you must have written many articles for your clients, which you or the client posted on various article directories to promote his business. Why can’t you do it, and why don’t you do it to market your writing services?

Tips 3

Burbling: Do not get confused. I want you to write powerful blurbs for every service that you offer.

Tips 4

Contact your past clients: Prepare a list of clients with whom you have worked in the past, but haven’t contacted for last six months or since the work got over, and send them a personal e-mail. This will remind them of you and your services, and they may get back to you with some work. Always remember, out of sight is out of mind.

Tips 5

A client a day contact program: Contact one existing, past or prospective client every day.

Tips 6

Hire a guru (mentor): Freelance writing is one profession in which to succeed you need a continuous flow of new and exciting ideas. Befriend with a person who keeps himself up-to-date with the latest happening. Leverage his expertise to build your writing career.

Tips 7

Start multiple Blogs: Categorize your writing services, and start one blog each for each category of services. For example, you can put blogging and article writing into one category, and article marketing and social media submission in another. Make a list of writing services you provide and categorize them.

Tips 8

Chart the uncharted water: Read the magazines, books and periodical that you have never read before. This will infuse new ideas and bring variety to your writing.

Tips 9

Write an e-book: Prepare your own information product. Start today and prepare an outline of two e-books that you should write.

Tips 10

Stay Positive: I know, you are thinking whatever, but this is as important as any other tips written above.

Constantly Creating New Ideas And Topics http://itlist.com/constantly-creating-new-ideas-and-topics/ http://itlist.com/constantly-creating-new-ideas-and-topics/#comments Sat, 27 Jun 2009 02:08:14 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1421 When your profession falls into writing, no matter what sort of writing it is that you do, the demand for coming up with new ideas is always very, very high.  Therein lay the problem of keeping up on that demand with new relevant ideas to write about.  Which is why you need to make sure you’re well aware of the many tactics writers use to help them come up with new ideas constantly.  Just remember, this is a skill that will take a lot of practice to really maintain properly, but keep at it and you’ll find yourself having more new ideas that you’ll ever know what to do with.

One of the most common methods, and one that you should most definitely be employing already, is to keep an idea notepad with you at all times.  Not necessarily an actual pen and paper mini notebook, but something to function as such.  If you have a smart phone, like an iPhone or Blackberry, you can use their note taking features to quickly jot down anything that pops into your head.  This keeps you ahead of the game with a wealth of ideas that you can look to later, when you find yourself in need.

Read.  Can’t stress that one enough.  The more you put your energy towards learning new things, or reading new ideas, whether through books or magazines or online articles, the more information you’re taking in that you can call upon at a later date.  Extraordinarily useful when coming up with a new topic to write about.

Find a friend or colleague to bounce a few ideas off.  Let them know about the concept and tell them some things you were considering, or ways you want to approach writing about the idea.  The input they have could help you guide yourself into a brilliant new direction you couldn’t have thought of on your own.

If you find yourself struggling to think of anything while sitting at your desk, take a break.  Go outside for a few minutes, get some fresh air and clear your head.  You’ll find yourself feeling much more refreshed, and after wicking away the fatigue, you’ll be in a much better place to re-energize your thinking.

Finally, as a last resort, twist around another idea you’ve already read about or heard about.  If you can’t find an idea all to your own, borrow someone else’s.  Don’t just rehash an article or book that you’ve read before of course.  But take what you learned there, or the basic concept, and apply it to your own outlook, and your own unique writing voice to manufacture an entirely new piece of work.
