01 Jul 11 Tips for Salary Negotiation at Interview

Salary negotiation is an important part of any final job interview, from both the interviewer and interviewee’s point of view. Salary has to be negotiated in such a way, that both the parties remain benefited. But often poor negotiation skill of the interviewee can spoil the entire process and result into unsatisfactory output. Don’t let your poor negotiation spoil your future. Here are some tips for you.

Don’t rush towards the negotiation process

Undoubtedly salary is one of the main pulling factors behind job switching. Being tempted by better salary we often change jobs. And that’s a common interest for both you and the interviewer; since the interviewer has to pay you. That’s an obvious question which may crop up at any part of the interview process. But don’t rush towards the salary discussion. When asked you may quote your expected salary or say it can be worked out later.

Know your value first

To ask for a reasonable salary, first you need to find your own market value. Judge your value in terms of logical perception of your knowledge, experience, skills and expertise, achievements, training, brand association and educational qualification.

Organization’s pay structure

Some organizations may have their own pay structure as per the candidates’ educational levels. Defined salary structures are at times made flexible, depending on candidate’s exclusive skills or extra-ordinary caliber.  Know these pay structures before negotiating salary.

Exclusive position

In case your job position is quite unique and exclusive or you are the only one who could get through the interview process you can call for a premium amount of salary. As for example, if the concerned company keeps only one brand manager and you have been selected as the one, you can ask for a good salary package.

Industry rate
Know the industry rate first. Know how much other companies in the same industry are paying to its employees, at similar level like you. Knowing the industry rate will help you in the negotiation process to put forth a logical demand of salary.

Put your greed aside

Don’t get too greedy about money. A good company can’t be missed out for a few extra bucks. If everything is fine and you decide to join, don’t let the greed come in between. If you are getting a decent package, join it. Later on with time as you build good rapport and prove your skills salary hike won’t be a problem for you. Consider the entire package, not just winning negotiation. Too tall demand of yours may make the interviewer find you unreasonable or money minded. So be fair, gentle and not too pushy.

Let a good negotiation bring you good luck and the dream job.

20 May 10 The Basic Table Manners

Table manners are equally important and same in any part of the world. Good table manners should be learnt right from the childhood. Proper table manners make both host and guest feel at ease, comfortable, confident and happy. Whether it’s a formal dinner or a casual party, table manners will be common everywhere. Follow the given tips below.

Take your seat with grace and panache. Sit up straight, yet comfortably. Don’t slouch or lean back in your chair.

Most commonly committed mistake is talking with mouth full of food. It’s a strict ‘no no’ and looks very unpleasant. If you have to speak gracefully take a real small bite, tuck into your cheek with your tongue, then speak softly and in short.

A big turn off are the people chewing noisily. This is one fundamental table manner. Such noisy eating habit is not only distracting and unappetizing, but also embarrassing.

Pick only moderate forkful size bites. Cut meat and salads into small pieces before putting into mouth, so that the excess parts do not hang from your mouth.

Don’t rush. Eat leisurely. Enjoy it! Eat with grace and style. Slow eating not only facilitates good digestion, but also shows your interest in food and the company. Hastened eating shows disrespect towards the host and apathy towards food.

Don’t wave utensils like knives, forks in the air. Besides chances of unwanted accidents it also shows your immaturity and hyper nature.

Keep your elbows off the dining table. Besides occupying space it can also cause dangerous knock-down of utensils, resulting into severe mess all around. Elbow rested on table make you lean and appear slouching.

Don’t get in the way of people eating or talking. Always look behind, make sure you didn’t step into his extreme proximity, disturbing his eating or talking process.

Common courteous words like – ‘thank you’, ‘please’, ‘excuse me’, ‘beg your pardon’ are not to be ignored. These handy words are of great help.

When you are through with your eating, don’t forget to compliment the cook. It’s his great culinary skill that made your evening so special. Thank him from bottom of your heart. Even if the meal was not so pleasant, leave a thanks note. It always encourages him to do better next time.

After eating don’t forget to wipe your lips with napkin. Leaving smudged stains on the edge of wine glasses are surely unappealing.

13 Nov 09 Bounce Back From Interview Tardiness

Being late to an interview is horrible, but not necessarily a job death sentence.  While this is most definitely not the best first impression you can make, you can still save face.  Sometimes there’s an emergency that is completely out of your hands.  Or even traffic mishaps that you can’t control.

Although the best way to save yourself from being tardy to an interview, is to make sure you’re not late in the first place.  That means mapping out your route beforehand.  Know the territory, and leave a few minutes earlier than needed.

If you cannot avoid being late, then always call ahead immediately to notify your interviewer of the situation.  You have a cell phone for a reason.  If there’s bad unexpected traffic, or an accident, call them immediately to let them know you’ll be late.  Explain the reason, apologize, and tell the interviewer that you’ll be there as quickly as possible.

When you arrive, don’t rush into the office.  Stay calm and composed.  Turn this into an opportunity to show your grace under pressure.  Being late to an interview could be considered a huge lapse in credibility.  But you can spin that by keeping your posture confident, and your demeanor positive and courteous.

By rushing in you show nervousness, which is essentially weakness.  If you crack under the stress of getting to an interview on time, are they going to want you during a real work crises?  Show that you can stay composed and confident in any scenario.

A good tactic actually is to rush as quickly as possible to the interview, then take a few moments before you enter the building to compose yourself.  The key here is staying calm, if you can’t stay calm you’re not going to make a good impression.  You’ve already got the tardiness strike against you, so your interview has to be stellar.
