Your fist tactic should always be networking.  Before you leave college make sure that you’ve got your name out there to the right people.  You want to stay in contact and make yourself known to a few of the select students around you, and your professors.  They will be a great resource for work down the line, so remember that, and keep those relationships avenues open.

Keep networking outside of school.  Try professional sites like linkedIn, etc, that offer connections with other professionals in the field.  Create lasting professional relationships, as these are where the best jobs will come from.  Companies frequently don’t openly advertise their best positions, and the only way you’ll hear about them is through somebody that you know.

Try your local newspaper, you won’t find fantastic jobs here most of the time, but you will find some decent options to pad your resume and provide income in transition.  Usually jobs advertised in a local newspaper don’t have a high applicant rate, so your chances of landing the job will also be better.

Finally, remember to stay professional.  Whether networking, or applying to the jobs, keep your demeanor professional, as your attitude says a lot about what manner of employee you will be at that company.  One of the biggest complaints about college graduates in the job market lately is that they have a false sense of entitlement.

Many recent grads almost feel as though a high paying job should be instantly available to them.  But that isn’t the case.  You have to work at a company and career to make it succeed, sometimes from the lower ranks of the ladder.  Stay courteous and polite always, be proud and confident, but also humble and realistic.  You don’t want to come off as a cocky self important applicant, because companies tend to stay away from them.  They aren’t hard workers, and they have no long term loyalty.  Both bad strikes to have against you.

Make The Most Of A Job You Hate http://itlist.com/make-the-most-of-a-job-you-hate/ http://itlist.com/make-the-most-of-a-job-you-hate/#comments Fri, 18 Dec 2009 04:59:41 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=2102 The recession is supposed to be over, but the jobs have been slow to return.  This is a huge conundrum if you find yourself stuck in a job that you hate.  You can’t really afford to quit and risk the gamble of finding work with few jobs available.  How do you manage being stuck between the perpetual rock and a hard place?  Well, here are a few tips for making that easier.

-Try thinking positively about the job you hate.  Consider the positive parts, such as the fact that you are lucky enough to have a job during this turmoil.  The fact that you have reliable enough work that you’ve stayed employed, and have been able to live more comfortably than many other Americans.  Thinking about your good fortune is a great way to bring that smile out.

-Set time limits on your tasks, to see if you can accomplish your goals.  This is almost a tactic to make a game out of the monotony you may suffer if you hate your job.  Also this helps you get faster, and better at accomplishing your tasks.  The appearance of becoming a better, harder worker, could help you advance into a higher position that you won’t hate.

-Take an interest in your coworkers.  Make friends, and be positive and good natured with them.  Creating a better work environment around you can really help how you feel at work.  A great way to do that is improve your relations with those around you, creating a friendly environment that you can enjoy.

-Finally, just because you have a job, doesn’t mean you can’t look for a different one.  Try looking for other opportunities that may serve you better.  Something that you can really get into, and have a true passion for, unlike your current job.  Just make sure to keep that knowledge silent, as some employers take personal offence when their employees look for work elsewhere.  The last thing you want is to lose the job you have, because you were looking for a different one.

Finding Funding For A Start Up Business http://itlist.com/finding-funding-for-a-start-up-business/ http://itlist.com/finding-funding-for-a-start-up-business/#comments Wed, 09 Dec 2009 22:19:01 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=2074 Having a great business idea is all well and good, but really only part of what you need to start a business.  If you don’t have funding, you’ll never get that business off the ground.  Finding funding for your business is often difficult, unless you know where to look.  So where do you go exactly, if you want to find some willing investors to fund your idea?

Well first, make a budget.  You have to have your money carefully budgeted.  That means how much you intend to spend to make your idea come to life, and how quickly an investor can expect to make their money back.  That means a realistic profit chart that you fully believe you will be able to adhere.  Not having your financial information  carefully planned will detract from how many will want to invest, this is your most important step.

Now you need a good business plan, and that means research on your part.  Look at the businesses that are similar to the one that you would like to start.  See the mechanics of what makes those businesses run, and learn everything you can.  From there you can make a brilliant business plan that covers all your bases, and that stands as a linear realistic guide to business success.  This is one of your main selling points to potential investors, so your plan needs to be iron clad, and well thought out.

From here you’re ready to find some funding.  Banks are a great place to go, as most offer business loans for just this sort of purpose.  Here is where your plan and financial map will serve you incredibly well, as the type of loan you can get will depend on both.  Your credit score combined with the viability of your idea will dictate how much money you can get, and what sort of interest rate you will be expecting.

Another tactic is to find business partners.  Also where your plan and financial map will be of chief importance.  Finding a partner means soliciting those that have the money to put up, and that are willing to work with your idea.  Find people that you want to work with, and that you work well with.  Otherwise you could find yourself in a terrible situation.

Bounce Back From Interview Tardiness http://itlist.com/bounce-back-from-interview-tardiness/ http://itlist.com/bounce-back-from-interview-tardiness/#comments Fri, 13 Nov 2009 19:21:04 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1975 Being late to an interview is horrible, but not necessarily a job death sentence.  While this is most definitely not the best first impression you can make, you can still save face.  Sometimes there’s an emergency that is completely out of your hands.  Or even traffic mishaps that you can’t control.

Although the best way to save yourself from being tardy to an interview, is to make sure you’re not late in the first place.  That means mapping out your route beforehand.  Know the territory, and leave a few minutes earlier than needed.

If you cannot avoid being late, then always call ahead immediately to notify your interviewer of the situation.  You have a cell phone for a reason.  If there’s bad unexpected traffic, or an accident, call them immediately to let them know you’ll be late.  Explain the reason, apologize, and tell the interviewer that you’ll be there as quickly as possible.

When you arrive, don’t rush into the office.  Stay calm and composed.  Turn this into an opportunity to show your grace under pressure.  Being late to an interview could be considered a huge lapse in credibility.  But you can spin that by keeping your posture confident, and your demeanor positive and courteous.

By rushing in you show nervousness, which is essentially weakness.  If you crack under the stress of getting to an interview on time, are they going to want you during a real work crises?  Show that you can stay composed and confident in any scenario.

A good tactic actually is to rush as quickly as possible to the interview, then take a few moments before you enter the building to compose yourself.  The key here is staying calm, if you can’t stay calm you’re not going to make a good impression.  You’ve already got the tardiness strike against you, so your interview has to be stellar.

Using Creativity To Motivate In The Workplace http://itlist.com/using-creativity-to-motivate-in-the-workplace/ http://itlist.com/using-creativity-to-motivate-in-the-workplace/#comments Thu, 23 Jul 2009 19:00:34 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1498 Evoking creativity is one of the best tools to get your employees, as well as yourself motivated to perform better.  Not to mention it’s a fantastic way to raise moral and help everyone get more involved with the company.  Creativity inspires one to think more, to be more involved at a real personal level, and to care about the job, opposed to just going through the motions to get work done.  Although it can be tough in the business world where professionalism and ethics are supposed to rule, bringing about a little creativity that everyone can be excited about isn’t impossible.

Start out simply with easy tactics, such as a casual day, allowing employees to actually think about their clothing choices, affording them the opportunity to dress however they want, as long as it’s still kept professional.  Seems like a simple tactic, but has been proven effective for many corporations.  Your team and you will feel better and more motivated if you are free to wear more comfortable clothing that you get to choose.

Any memos that you personally write down, try doing so in crayon every once in a while.  Sounds simple, but is proven to reconnect yourself to that inner child, sparking a new viewpoint and renewed energy and creativity towards the work you are doing.  Try this yourself, and suggest it to your team.  Sort of a silly idea, but that’s part of the fun, and bringing in fun helps keep morale up so you all stay motivated and positive while accomplishing your tasks.

Try having periods of time where you play music in the background, allowing your employees to relax and feel a bit more at home.  Keep the music at a low decibel, so as not to disturb the workplace to the point you can’t get any work done of course.  But even this simple change can make your team feel more at home, allowing them to relax and perform better.  Taking down that barrier of keeping too professional at work is key to getting that creativity to flow.

Keep magazines unrelated to work in employee areas.  This way on breaks and such, the employees are free to browse things outside of the work environment, keeping the brain working and churning on different topics all the time.  That keeps them awake, happy, and inspired.  Those sorts of employees are just the kind you want to get the most done, and they’ll do that work better and faster.

Tips For Attracting Employees http://itlist.com/tips-for-attracting-employees/ http://itlist.com/tips-for-attracting-employees/#comments Thu, 16 Jul 2009 22:08:29 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1460 Anybody can attract new employees, whether through advertisements through the company, or a job board advertising campaign.  The problem is attracting a quality workforce, and that is not always very easy to do.  The real tactic you want to use is by knowing what to offer, so that the upper echelon of applicants will be attracted to your job opening.  For that it’s all about how you present the job offering.

Firstly you want to find out what the most common wage from opposing companies stands at, and match that pay level, so that you can remain competitive.  The most qualified applicants aren’t going to waste their time on a job that would pay them less than if they applied to an opposing company, to do the same job for more money.

Try to find some creative perks that you can offer your new employee hopefuls.  If you’re not a large company, obviously you’re probably going to have to get a bit more creative with what you can offer, but anything that you can manage will only be more positive for the job opening.  Anything that makes your company look better, no matter what you can offer, is always helpful for getting those more desirable applicants.

Make sure to show that there is plenty of room for growth within the company, and that if you work hard you can climb the ladder fairly quickly.  Employees need incentive to take a job and do well at that job, nobody wants to hit a glass ceiling shortly after taking a job, so make sure to outline the benefits your company offers through promotion opportunities.

Have some form of employee incentive program in place to encourage hard work even more.  By offering opportunities for employees to earn more money, or receive some sort of privileges you increase the team morale.  By increasing morale your team is going to work harder.  Showing potential applicants that these opportunities are available will entice them to apply to your company, opposed to a rival corporation.

Good Writing Is In The Editing http://itlist.com/good-writing-is-in-the-editing/ http://itlist.com/good-writing-is-in-the-editing/#comments Sat, 27 Jun 2009 03:13:42 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1424 Good writing is about successfully conveying ideas and thoughts into words, so that you may help someone else understand your point of view through the writing medium.  Good writing is also in the editing.  Good writing is knowing how much to write, how you should structure a sentence, and also making sure that your writing flows free of grammatical errors.  So what should you look for when you’re editing a piece you’ve just completed?

Well, always reread anything you’ve written a few times, to ensure that your sentences flow naturally, and to clear up any grammatical mistakes you may have made.  Good policy also suggests reading your pieces aloud, as it’s a fantastic method to double check how your writing sounds on the whole.  Reading aloud will give you the opportunity to make sure that everything flows properly, and that all sentences sound complete.

Another widely used, and remarkably effective tactic, is to read in reverse.  This is helpful for weeding out those cursed grammatical errors that you may still miss despite completing two or three rereads.  When you read your piece in reverse it eliminates the brain’s tendency to remember what you’ve written, which can cause you to skip over mistakes without even knowing that you have.

When restructuring a sentence never add more words to the sentence than were originally there, always cut the excess.  The problem with most first drafts of any piece of writing, is that they are much longer than necessarily needed.  Focus on condensing your concepts into as few sentences and paragraphs as possible, that way you can form a short concise work that will appeal to a broader audience.

These are just a few quick editing tips, there are many, many more concepts when you really get more in depth into what the editing process can do for a piece of writing.  But follow those guidelines and you’ll find yourself well on your way to becoming a better, and more complete writer.

Take Control Of An Interview http://itlist.com/take-control-of-an-interview/ http://itlist.com/take-control-of-an-interview/#comments Wed, 17 Jun 2009 20:34:57 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1400 Taking control of an interview is one of the absolute best ways to stand out, and make yourself the number one candidate for the job you want.  This tactic has an incredibly high success rate when done effectively, in fact most interviewers specifically look for the type of person who is take charge enough to really take control throughout the process.  The problem is that most people don’t have the skills to pull this off well, and attempting to control an interview can really backfire on you.  Which is why there are a few guidelines you should remember in your bid to control an interview, and make yourself into the center of attention for getting that job.

You need a clear objective that you want to accomplish, and not something like getting the job, because that goes without saying, otherwise you wouldn’t be at the interview.  You want to have a clear example of what you want to come across in the interview, such as certain skills or experience that highlight why you’re right for the job.  Make sure those come across to the interviewer as fantastic examples of your past experience, or specially trained skill set and how it applies to them and the potential job.

Research the company to a decent degree, so that you know what they are about, how they conduct business, and their mission statement.  That way you can take control through relevant industry questions that apply to you and the job that you are hoping to get.  This way not only will you be able to show your knowledge of the company, but also the interest you have in doing the work necessary to learn about the position and better prepare yourself.

Finally, look for any opportunity to tell a relevant anecdote to showcase your experience, or skill set, showing you not only understand the company and the position, but also to highlight something worthwhile that you did at another job.  Proving your worth to the company you are interviewing for, and relaying the skills you can provide that they need.

Make Yourself Stand Out In An Interview http://itlist.com/make-yourself-stand-out-in-an-interview/ http://itlist.com/make-yourself-stand-out-in-an-interview/#comments Sat, 13 Jun 2009 13:57:40 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1393 Anytime that an economy takes a hit, like the global economy has been for a while now, the job market become much, much more competitive.  This is simply because there are fewer jobs available in a recession, which makes it all the more important for you to make yourself stand out from other applicants, increasing your chances of landing that new job.  Of course work history and qualifications can be key, but those are only necessary to land an interview, after that whether you get the job or not is based solely on your ability to wow the interviewer.  Here are a few pointers you can take advantage of, to make yourself look like the perfect candidate every time.

- Firstly, dress appropriately.  I shouldn’t even have to mention this one, but some people undervalue the importance of looking well groomed and professional.  In other words, always leave the jeans and sneakers at home.

- Research, research, research.  Make sure you know the company you’re interviewing with as well as possible.  The in’s and out’s of what the company is about, how they function, and the goals they are working towards as specifically as possible.  The more information you know the easier that you can help conversation freely flow, which makes you look like a person interested and informed in the company to which you are applying.  That is always good.

- Ask real questions about the company and the position to outline your interest and willingness to get and excel at the job to which you are applying.   Don’t try to control the interview with your questions however, as that tactic fails about as often as it succeeds, but make yourself appear as interested as you are in the position.  Always do what you can to let the interviewer know that you want the job.

- Don’t be afraid to talk yourself up.  This is your interview, don’t waste your time by not making yourself look like the ideal candidate for the position to which you applied.  Go in confident, and outline the features you have that make you a fantastic candidate for the job, including your desire to do the job.  Stay away from suggesting you are the perfect candidate however, as this is more of a form statement made by too many people, and means nothing more than you are just trying to get a job.  Show real interest, it will make all the difference.

Of course there are many other factors that can determine how well an interview goes and your likelihood of getting a job after applying, but following those four steps is a fantastic start to helping you stand out from the rest of the applicants.

Find Your Dream Job, Whether They’re Hiring Or Not http://itlist.com/find-your-dream-job-whether-theyre-hiring-or-not/ http://itlist.com/find-your-dream-job-whether-theyre-hiring-or-not/#comments Wed, 20 May 2009 22:02:15 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1350 You’re not going to find your dream job by searching internet job boards, or Google-ing for openings at companies that you would love to work for.  Mostly because a large majority of corporations just don’t have the time or effort necessary to commit to that scale of a job search.  Simply put, it takes much too much of a company’s vital resources to start a hiring period, unless it’s absolutely necessary.  Mostly because the company needs somebody to overlook and run the process, usually a dedicated employee concentrating only on finding the right people throughout the hiring process.  Not everyone can free up a salary and spot in the corporation for such a person.

Which is exactly why it’s much more proactive and you’ll net better results by finding jobs for yourself, instead of waiting for them to pop up on the job boards.  What you need to do is network yourself.  Find the companies you would like to work for, or the jobs that you want, and get connected to them.

First, search for the people you want to work for, whether they seem to have any job openings or not.  You might just have exactly what they didn’t even know they were looking for.  Next you want to get in touch with their human resources department, as in almost every case, HR handles employee hiring and terminations.  Although another common tactic, but one with a lower rate of success, is to contact management heads.  This can either pay off completely, or fail miserably, as managers usually have very busy schedules, and if you don’t impress almost immediately, you are doomed to be completely forgotten.

From here you basically want to send a friendlier variation on the sort of cover letter you would send with your resume.  Make your intentions clear, that you’re interested in a job, introduce yourself, and personalize everything to let them know your qualifications shortlist and why you want to work for that company.  Try that enough and you’re bound to find somebody that didn’t even know they needed you, thereby landing a much better job than you could have found searching Monster.com for the umpteenth time.

Optimizing Your Website’s Search Engine Effectiveness http://itlist.com/optimizing-your-website%e2%80%99s-search-engine-effectiveness/ http://itlist.com/optimizing-your-website%e2%80%99s-search-engine-effectiveness/#comments Fri, 03 Apr 2009 22:48:41 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1211 What’s the use of building a website for your business if nobody comes to view your site?  Well, there really isn’t any purpose, especially if you’re going to waste your efforts on a poorly designed site that can’t compete on search engines like Google and Yahoo!, for higher ranking in search results.  And there are quite a few low cost options for optimizing your webpage to function more effectively with search engines.

The number one tactic is picking appropriate keywords for any articles found on your site.  When somebody is looking to Google to find a product or service, they type a few words into Google’s search bar, and sift through the results that pop up.  Which is why you want to appropriately keyword all the content on your site by using terms most likely to be used when somebody is using a search engine.  For example, you want to use the same key phrase relatively often on a page, but not so often that the quality of your written content suffers.  Which means you want your title to involve the key phrase, as well as your Meta Tags, and any photographs on your site should be titled incorporating that same key phrase.

That way anybody who is looking for that specific thing, and types something similar to what your website offers into a search engine, your site is more likely to pop up.  And you want to title your images as such, because that way you can also swipe some traffic from anybody doing an image search, like Google’s or Yahoo!’s image search options.

Search engines also rank you on overall popularity, meaning if your website is found referenced on other websites, you’re more likely to feature well in their search results.  Which is why you want to network and exchange links with as many similar products and companies as you can.  While this sounds like a conflict on interest in most ways, it’s also a fantastic method to get your website out there, and the more people you attract, the more customers/interested parties you will have.

And finally don’t forget to make sure you’ve submitted your website’s main address as well as the address of every page therein to any search engine’s archives.  Google allows you to do this for free, which is what makes them one of your best low cost resources, whereas Yahoo! requires a fee to enter your website into their search result considerations.
