29 Aug 09 Write A More Appealing Headline

If you write anything on the internet, for which you hope to garner attention, you absolutely need a good headline.  Studies have shown that 8-10 web surfers will notice your page based upon the headline of an article alone.  But that number drops to 2-10 after that headline is read, which means you need to always make sure that your headline is as interesting, as well as informative, as possible.  In order to beat that popular curve, and drive more traffic to your site, you need a headline that is going to pull in the readers.

That means using the right keywords.  If we’re talking about the videogame world, for example, you want to throw out the name of the platform you’re talking about immediately.  That means emphasizing “Xbox 360” or “Wii” as that’s where most of your searches are going to come from.  But after that, it’s how you use the keyword to your advantage.

You want a good short headline, that’s going to catch someone’s attention, while informing them of why they want to read your article.  For example, sticking to the videogame world, something like “How To Beat Your Friends On Xbox 360” isn’t really going to pull anybody in.  Sounds too generic, uninformed, and also doesn’t excite the audience for what your writing can do for them, not to mention it’s much too long.  “Dominate The Xbox 360” is a much more concise crowd grabber, more general, so as to lure in a broader interest.  Plus the shorter headline just makes you feel more pumped to read the article, and get what you can from the information.

Go for big keywords, short headlines, and use gripping vocabulary.  Words that really jump out and grab people, so that they have no choice but to read what you’ve written.  Remember, your headline is your first introduction to your piece, so try and make sure it’s something that people will want to read.

19 Jun 09 Use Your Keywords Correctly

When you write absolutely anything online that you expect to garner attention from web surfers needs to properly make use of inserting keywords.  Otherwise you’re basically wasting your time on blog, articles, etc, that nobody will ever read.  Keywords are the language of search engines, and you want to use them effectively throughout everything you write, so that your site will rank higher on the major search engines.  The higher you rank, the more likely your work is to pop up for anybody randomly searching for content relating to yours.

Although as important as good, fluid keyword placement is, nothing is more valuable than realizing the importance of every word you write, not just the ones intended to trigger search results.  All the keywords in the world aren’t going to make bad writing interesting enough to captivate a steadily large audience.  So never undervalue the importance of quality writing, because that’s what keeps the people coming back after they’ve found you on a search engine.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone using a search engine to find the kind of content you are going to provide through your writing.  Think of the words they would enter into a search bar.  You want to use words and phrases like these relating to your topic, fairly frequently throughout the piece, but not so often that the quality of what you’re writing suffers.  Your content should be clearly discernable and comfortable for the average person to read, but you want to stuff those keywords in as often as possible without compromising that quality.  It’s also worthy to note that you’ll have the most effectiveness on search engines by frequently using your keywords at the top and bottom of a page.

Also, don’t undervalue your title line.  This is the first big draw of any page, and the first piece of information that a search engine takes into consideration, so all of the most important keywords you are using should appear in the title.  Form a relevant, concise title, informative but also quick and to the point, so as to grab the most attention as quickly as possible.
