This made me wonder if it indeed is a soaring market or just a fad like gazillion others that preceded this, and I decided to look for some quantifiable data to see why a marketer should consider including mobiles in the marketing mix.

That brought me to a Gadget Ownership, 2010 study conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project in this month in the United States. The result tallied with the common belief on the matter.

The study suggested that 85% Americans own a cell phone, and only 59% and 52% owns desktop computers and laptop computers, respectively. Another 4% is said to have access to tablet computers. (See image below).

The depth of cell phone penetration has provided a never-before for marketers to reach individual customers. But do not assume that the old rules of the game will be applicable. To become successful here, you may need to rethink the rules of engagement. You should, therefore, make a move fast, before everyone else does.

US Consumers Like Wireless Providers’ Facebook Fan Pages http://itlist.com/us-consumers-like-wireless-providers-facebook-fan-pages/ http://itlist.com/us-consumers-like-wireless-providers-facebook-fan-pages/#comments Sat, 24 Apr 2010 16:42:00 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/us-consumers-like-wireless-providers-facebook-fan-pages/ In a study conducted by Compete.com, it was found that more and more US consumers are using Facebook fan pages of the wireless providers to connect with them.

Previous year, the four biggest wireless service providers in the United States — Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and — Sprint have rolled out their Facebook fan pages. The data released by Compete suggests that many US consumers are using these fan pages to stay in touch with their preferred Wireless service provider.

Facebook fan page work as company profile page where companies publish details about themselves, and also use it to network with the users. These profiles are seeing increase in the usage, though in absolute term, time spent is not too high.

In February 2010, users have spent typically 95 seconds in each session on Sprint’s fan page, but ever since it is on the rise and same hold true for other major wireless carriers. Users are using these pages to keep themselves abreast with the recent development, and the growth trend suggests that people love to connect with their wireless carriers. See image for detail.

Freelance Writing – When Should You Work on Your Own Project? http://itlist.com/freelance-writing-when-should-you-work-on-your-own-project/ http://itlist.com/freelance-writing-when-should-you-work-on-your-own-project/#comments Fri, 26 Mar 2010 02:18:50 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/freelance-writing-when-should-you-work-on-your-own-project/ Writing for others may get you some money, but you cannot build a fortune from it. Yes, there are some freelance writers who charge a killing, but unfortunately most of us are not that fortunate. Then what should I do? Should you leave freelance writing?

Well, the answer to the above question is big NO with big N and Big O. Freelance writing gives you a stable source of income—I know they told you it is not stable—leaving it will not be a good idea. You should rather continue working for your clients.

Then how you can increase your income?

I wish, you would have waited before asking this question. Anyway, I was saying you should continue working for your clients, but you should also put a project or two in place. Start something on your own.

Can I do it?

Of course, you can do it. You have been doing it for your clients, why cannot you do it for yourself? I understand PPC, SEO, marketing, and everything else is very, very important for web, but none of them (or all of them even if combined together) is as important as the content. And this is what you have been doing for your clients—creating great content. So why not for yourself?

Find a niche that you would like to work into and roll out your own project. You can create a niche website, an information product, or if you are experienced enough you can become consultant or give coaching. There are many avenues that you can explore.

But when to do it?

Yeah, I know this is a big IF & BUT questions (though without if). You can do it on weekends. Start working on weekends if you do not already do, and work on your projects on weekends. I know this is a lot of trouble, but trouble is what you have to take if you want to make it big. They lied to you when they said that it was going to be no sweat.

Creating your own product or starting your own project is a hard work. That is why not many people are doing so, but the reward is enormous. There is not just light at the end of the tunnel, but there is a huge spotlight and a big stage waiting for you at the end of the tunnel.

Start working on weekends, and make it big. Best of luck for your journey! Do write in how it was.

Why E-Book Readers Got More Male Buyers Than Female? http://itlist.com/why-e-book-readers-got-more-male-buyers-than-female/ http://itlist.com/why-e-book-readers-got-more-male-buyers-than-female/#comments Sun, 06 Dec 2009 15:57:42 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=2064 In a research conducted by Mediamark Research & Intelligence, it was found that more males than the females are using e-book readers in the United States. Why is it so? Why despite women being more into books and reading are not using electronic book reading devices? And why male members of society who read less than their female counterpart reads (or buys) more e-book readers?

The possible explanation to this could be their (male members) love for the gadgets or say everything that is electronic. And may be (here I am guessing), the men’s love for gadgets has put the other half of their life away from it. After all, it is the matter of attention: who is paying attention to what.

Research findings

  • 56.3% of e-book are men, where as female constitutes the rest 43.7% of the readers.
  • Adults aged between 35-54 are 20% more likely to buy an e-book readers.
  • 87% of the e-book readers have annual household income of more than $100,000.
  • 11% of the e-book reader are more likely to own their home in comparison to average US adult.
  • 111% are more likely to have a graduate or post graduate degree than average American.

E-book-reader-survey

The study should also have concentrated on finding the following:

  • How many e-book owners actually read books on the device?
  • How many hours do they spend on reading anything on the reader?
  • How does owning an e-book reader have affected their reading habit? Have they started to read more or got so intoxicated by the device that actual reading has gone down?

The result will then give the actual figure of e-book readership. The current study has just given a figure of how many people own an e-book reader.

Give Better Presentations http://itlist.com/give-better-presentations/ http://itlist.com/give-better-presentations/#comments Mon, 21 Sep 2009 20:06:58 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1729 If you’re working in the corporate world, at almost any job, you’ll find that at times you have to give presentations.  If those presentations have to be given during a meeting, in front of an audience, you’ll find you’re judged on a lot more than just what you have to say.  Writing a good presentation isn’t even half the battle of being a good presenter.  Your words aren’t as important as how you use them, and that’s all part of becoming a good presenter.

The first place you should start, is knowing what you’re talking about.  Having a well written presentation is all well and good, but you need to really know your stuff.  No presentation is complete without a Q&A period at the end.  If you don’t really know what you’re talking about, you won’t be able to answer those questions.  That would make you look really bad, so know your stuff!

Understand your audience, because you’ll have to tailor your presentation to them.  Are you trying to sell an idea or a product?  Are you trying to make a name for yourself and what you’ve accomplished?  Or is your presentation purely to educate somebody about a certain work related topic?  All questions you should ask yourself when preparing, as the answers should change how you decide to do your presentation.  The way an idea is presented when you’re trying to sell it, is much, much different than how you would teach.

Now plan your presentation.  Make a detailed outline of the topics you want to touch upon, and decide the best order possible for you to bring them across.  Consider your audience, and the goal of your presentation, and choose the best arrangement to serve those needs.  Try to influx your ability into this part, so that you can ensure your presentation will flow, and will gain the attention you want.

Finally, in the actual delivery of your presentation, make sure your body language is on point.  You want to appear positive, and in a good mood at all times.  Even if things aren’t going your way, stay insightful and courteous.  Dress to impress, so stay professional, and keep your body language positive.  That means good posture, and healthy gestures with your hands while speaking.  Practice your speech so that you aren’t nervous during delivery, and so that you don’t fumble across any words.  With the practice and knowledge on hand, you’re on the right path to making your presentation successful.

Some More Crowd-Pulling Headlines http://itlist.com/some-more-crowd-pulling-headlines/ http://itlist.com/some-more-crowd-pulling-headlines/#comments Sun, 28 Jun 2009 03:44:33 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=1428 Taking our discussion on headlines that builds interest for the article following the headline, I am going to share some more crowd-pulling headlines in this article. (Read How to Write Crowd-Pulling Headlines, Part – I & II).

Be descriptive, be personal

A descriptive headline builds interest in the article by giving some idea about what to expect. And making it personal helps visitors relate with the headline and the article following it.

Example:

  1. Unemployed Mark Found Financial Security.
  2. Coward John Defeated Bully Mark.

Learn to…

Learn to… headlines work the same way as do How to… headlines (read How to… headline guide). This type of headline suggests that the article following it will teach the visitors about the topic in question. You can either use a list-like structure for the article or blog post following learn to… headline or split the article or blog post in subsections by introducing appropriate headings.

Example:

  1. Learn to Play Guitar.
  2. Learn Driving Free.

Step-by-Step Guide to…

Like learn to… you can also use step-by-step guide to… headline to tell the visitors that the article following such headlines will teach certain skills one step at a time. The article following this type of headline should be written in the list format.

Example:

  1. Step-by-Step Guide to SEO.
  2. Step-by-Step Guide to Protecting Your PC from Virus.

…in Easy Steps

This is another way to write headlines. Unlike the headline writing strategies dealt above, where the signifiers were added at the beginning of the headline, you will need to add “in Easy Steps” at the end of the headline. This strategy is equally effective in pulling visitors to your website. Use list like structure for the article following this type of headlines.

Example:

  1. Networking in Easy Steps
  2. Learn to Play Piano in Easy Steps

Can Spybot Compete With Pay Antivirus Services? http://itlist.com/can-spybot-compete-with-pay-antivirus-services/ http://itlist.com/can-spybot-compete-with-pay-antivirus-services/#comments Sat, 18 Apr 2009 07:19:56 +0000 SamElli http://itlist.com/?p=1291 So how useful is Spybot Search & Destroy really?  If you have the free program installed on your computer, you’ll at least notice that every time you run a scan Spybot seems to find more “spyware” and “adware” than using most other programs, but how much good is Spybot actually doing?  The answer, as most people will tell you, is not as much as you would hope.

Spybot doesn’t really do much to help you if your computer has major issues, as the program just isn’t designed to clean up the really big stuff.  Where Spybot’s central usefulness lies is in deleting the little spyware and adware stuff.  Such as internet cookies that count as spyware or adware that can load up your computer causing slower than normal performance.  Of which Spybot is very effective, cleaning up all manner of small issues that you never necessarily considered to be big problems for your computer, but you’ll still see some sort of a difference by getting rid of the small stuff.

Other free programs like AVG’s free version, or AdAware which is also free, are much more capable when removing the big stuff like trojans or worms.  In fact AdAware is probably the best resource you’ll find for free to clean up any issues you may be having with your PC when it comes to viruses and affected performance.

Which actually brings me to another point, and mistake that many people make, you don’t need to spend money on the big virus protection software brands like Norton Antivirus, or McAfee.  Most people never suffer a major issue using just Spybot, AdAware and AVG.  While it’s sort of an annoyance to have three different virus programs to juggle, your PC in the end will actually be safer, and you’ll have a few dollars more left over in your wallet.
