A good romantic novel always comes as a gasp of fresh air, with intoxicating charm and vivid imagination. One just can’t resist it. But even if romance comes to you naturally, penning it down isn’t so easy. Here are some tips about writing a romance studded novel.

Characterization

It’s the romantic characters of a novel that we live with, breathe in, fantasize and admire. Thus characterization is very important part of romantic novel writing. Infuse life into your characters, make them real, throbbing with energy. Even if the characters are like ‘dream come true’, make them appear real and close to life. Build them carefully, pouring your heart into it. Their thinking, nature, appearance, talks – everything has to reflect in your story. Make characters so real and romantic, that your readers fall in love with them.

Get inspired from reality

Real people should be your inspiration. If your characters belong to countryside, go and interact with the people there. It will help you in weaving characters, close to reality. If your character is a complete romantic person, talk to a romantic person in reality. Spend time together, watch him or her, and find out his or her story. The more you mix up with people in reality, better your characters shape up.

Make a perfect ambience

Get into detail of situations. If your hero falls in love with a coffee shop waitress, create such situation. Create an ideal coffee shop in your novel. Describe everything – from aroma of coffee to the story of corner table – always occupied by couples. Since romance will bloom in the setting, make it appear real. A love story can bloom even in a cemetery. Love stories need not always sound like a fairy tale.

Build climax slowly

Make your readers wait patiently for the right moment. Don’t give them the scoop of ice cream so easily. Let it come slowly, teasing the reader bit by bit. Build drama, conflict, climax, suspense. Don’t let the steamy scene come so easily. Don’t let the story rush. Remember, true love doesn’t unveil overnight. Let it bloom slowly yet steadily.

Finish with an impact behind

Sign off your story with grace. Finish with a deep impact behind. Make ending so impactful that it stays in your readers’ heart forever, burning with passion. Good novel readers swear by and give example of that love, everywhere.

Go for it!

How to keep Creative Ideas Flowing? http://itlist.com/how-to-keep-creative-ideas-flowing/ http://itlist.com/how-to-keep-creative-ideas-flowing/#comments Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:49:00 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/how-to-keep-creative-ideas-flowing/ Who doesn’t want to be creative? But only a handful of us are creative. On contrary to this ratio, we all are creative within; creativity is there in all of us. But most of us don’t realize it, don’t cultivate it further. But, creativity is required everywhere – from education to business, from physics to psychology. Without creativity, life comes to a halt. Creativity gives vent to ones’ imagination, thinking, ideation power, and understanding of the surrounding. It’s the passion to create something new, which is the driving force behind all innovations in this world.

But how to keep the creative juice flowing? Here are tips below regarding where to get creative ideas from.

Choose an area of interest

Choose an area of work, which interests you. Don’t do what everyone is doing and is counted as trendy, or what brings money. Follow your heart and aptitude. You should do things which interest you, what you are passionate about. Then work will never seem like burden, it will be enjoyable. Within your passionate field further choose an area which you are good at. Like some artists are best in oil painting. So they excel if they go to the same field.

Draw inspiration from a source

You should be inspired by someone, to get going. It could be anyone – a mentor whose work inspire you or a famous person, a renowned global personality whose creations and success have always driven you crazy. Don’t imitate them blindly, get inspired by them.

Challenge yourself, do something new

Don’t end up doing what the rests have been doing. Challenge yourself constantly. Even if it seems impossible and full of hurdles in reality, if you think your idea is good and you can do it, go for it. It may take time and patience, but all great things come after long wait. Don’t be nailed down by failures. Failures will take you to success. If breaking rules help in procuring something good, let it happen.

Write down your ideas

Whenever something unique comes to your mind, pen it down and keep safely. It will keep you involved, focused, motivated and will help you to measure your progress.

Consult outer sources

Stay humble and open to new ideas. Don’t think you know it all. Tomorrow while talking to someone you come up with a better idea than before. So keep learning from others, books, films, articles – whatever is relevant for you. Even in an informal chat over coffee, great ideas may spring up.

Stay creative!

5 More Ways to Improve Your Writing Part-XI http://itlist.com/5-more-ways-to-improve-your-writing-part-xi/ http://itlist.com/5-more-ways-to-improve-your-writing-part-xi/#comments Fri, 02 Oct 2009 23:56:35 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=1777 We have come a long was in this series, and in the process we have learned quite a few things. We have covered from timing to inspiration to description to techniques to tools of writing. Each one of them was important, and so are the tips I am going to share in this part. In this part of the 5 Ways to Improve Your Writing series, I will tell you about quality; about how you can maintain the quality of your writing. Let’s begin with shedding inhibition for risks.

Take risks

Do not always play a safe game; rather, never play a safe game. Take risks and explore the terrain. You will not learn new things about life, about new ways to construct sentences, and will never get new ideas to write about until you venture out and take risk. Try different construction; try different storyline; so what if you fail!

Revisit your write-ups

Reading and analyzing what you have written in the past is another way to ensure quality of your future writing. You should have a sense of history. You should know from where you started and how far have you come, and then only you can realistically decide where you can go from here.

Rope in your friend

This advice is the toughest to follow because no matter how good your friendship is, he or she will not like to do proofreading for you, at least not readily. My friends have never done that for me, and neither have I put myself through the grueling session of proofreading for my friends. You got the clue, but still you need to talk your friend into proofreading your stuff. If they don’t agree then you have not tried hard enough.

Take a break

Writing is not like producing soap in the factory. You cannot just keep on pouring oil and chemicals for hours, even when you are tired and exhausted, to get the final product. To write well, you need to take breaks between your writing. Play games, watch TV, listen to music, or do whatever you like, but take breaks.

Take a break then return to proofread

Do not proofread your document right after finishing it. You will miss out many errors because your mind was primed by the article. Take a break 10-20 minutes and then come back to do the proofreading. Please do not think about what you wrote during the break.

5 More Ways to Improve Your Writing Part-VI http://itlist.com/5-more-ways-to-improve-your-writing-part-vi/ http://itlist.com/5-more-ways-to-improve-your-writing-part-vi/#comments Fri, 25 Sep 2009 20:49:35 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/5-more-ways-to-improve-your-writing-part-vi/ Inspiration plays a big role in the process of writing, and every writer is looking for that fleeting moment of insight, or a bright flash of revelation to get inspired and create his or her magnum opus. There is two ways to get inspired: one is to sit leisurely and wait for that fleeting moment that occurs once in a life time for a common man, or to actively search for inspiration. This post will talk about the places where you can look for inspiration.

Indulge in other art form

There is much more to this world then writing, writing techniques, and grammar. Learn music, read history, admire art, visit art galleries, touch a sculpture, or see people dance. These art forms entertain you and fill you with energy to write and think. Isn’t it inspiration? If not then let me tell you nothing is.

Consume audio podcast

Everyone who makes a podcast is not a jerk. I know you always secretly believed it. There are quite a many brilliant people in this industry. Listen to at least one of them, and do it regularly. Your mind will never cease to be amazed on the quality of ideas you will get.

Write a journal

Yes, this time the inspiration will come from within you. Writing a journal will help you find things from your own life on which you can write. Everyone is a story, and as a writer you are an anthology, so look no further.

Write your feelings down

Feeling is at the root of stories that we write, therefore, having a journal of feelings will help you write well. While writing down feelings, also write the occasion and reason, these will help you understand the feeling and context when you come back to the journal.

Sort out your thoughts

This is another place where you did not look when you were searching for inspiration. That slimy thing between your ears is very powerful, make use of it. Write down all the brief or long thoughts that come to you, and come back to the list every week. This will help you a lot in finding the writing ideas.

5 More Ways to Improve Your Writing http://itlist.com/5-more-ways-to-improve-your-writing/ http://itlist.com/5-more-ways-to-improve-your-writing/#comments Sat, 19 Sep 2009 03:15:16 +0000 bikram http://itlist.com/?p=1718 In the last article titled, 5 Ways to Improve Your Writing, I shared five valuable tips that will help you improve your writing. Continuing our discussion from the point where we left, I am going to share five more tips on the same topic.

Draw and Outline and follow along

An outline is very important for writing. This is a time saving device that also helps in organizing your thoughts. Make an outline of the article or academic paper that you area about to write, and use bullet points to map what all you are going to cover under what heading. Writing will be much easier after this.

Edit, Write, Edit, Edit, Edit, Write

Does this remind you of the way you do the actual writing? Well, if it does then congratulations, and if it doesn’t then you need to work on it because no one is perfect and everyone tends to make errors while writing. Hence; you should be editing your work once you are done writing. Never consider the first draft a final work. Editing will help you remove unnecessary fat from your article.

Is it passion that you are missing?

C’mon what the heck passion has to do with writing?

I have often heard this line of reason. Tell me something, have you written a love letter to your girl friend? I know it is a pretty old concept, so, if you haven’t go and ask your parents or someone older than you who loved in the time and age when the Internet, cell phone or pager was not around.

In those good old times, people wrote letters, and they will tell you how many hours they invested in crafting one letter, sometime even days. They did it because they were passionate about the person who will receive the letter. Do this with your writing. Write on the subject you are passionate about and see the difference in the quality.

Are you here?

Live in present and observe your surroundings. This will give you more stories and inspiration then even the greatest book can. Ask questions, if you do not understand, and listen intently.

Take a break

You should take some time off before you begin editing your written work. Take some time off, and go for a walk or listen to music, that is to say, do whatever you think is good to keep you from thinking about the work that you have just finished. Come back after 20-30 minutes and edit your work.
