12 Jan 11 How to Write within the Word Limits?

Is it often you are asked to write within few numbers of words and you just don’t know how to write within the given word limit? Well, you are not an exception. Many great writers even fail to write within stated word limit. Often it becomes very difficult to write in short, lengthy writing comes easily to us. But, there are circumstances where exceeding word limit is not only time wastage but also get us negative marks in examinations. Learn these few tricks of writing within word limit.

Organize thoughts, jot down points

Don’t just go with the flow. Organize your thoughts first and jot down the points you wish to include. Write each point below one another and leave space for elaboration. Now concentrate on each point and elaborate. Depending upon the word limit perform elaboration part. Don’t elaborate too much that you exceed word limit. Rather than focusing too much on elaborating one point, move on to the next point so that you don’t skip any of them yet stay within the word limit. You always have the scope of getting back to each point once the write up is completed and add more lines if word limit has not been met yet.

Avoid repetitions

One effective way of meeting word limit is by not repeating any thought or meaning twice. Often we keep stretching an intended message over several lines. It keeps fattening our write up. Such technique helps only when we lack substance and wish to write long. Make sure, you convey your points in a sentence or two. Repetitions not only unnecessarily lengthen articles but also bore readers.

Keep a constant watch on word count

Don’t wait for counting words at the end; keep a close watch on words written right from the start. Latest version of Microsoft words automatically displays number of words written in the bottom of the screen. Else after every few lines you can manually check the word count. It will help you to keep your write up within the word limit.

Edit at the end

Of course easiest and most practiced option is editing write up and making it short. When you just couldn’t help yourself from writing a long article and exceeding word limit you are left with the option of revising it carefully, editing all unnecessary points out. You may have to edit then read, again edit and read.

22 Sep 09 5 More Ways to Improve Your Writing Part-IV

Writing is an art, and like a visual artist, you need to painstakingly craft each sentence than each paragraph. The beauty of art lies in precision of techniques, attentions to details, and appropriate use of devices. This holds true with writing as well. In this article, I will share 5 tips that will make your writing appear like an art form.

Find an audience and kill them

Well, this is known to all the fiction writers, especially poets. Nobody likes to read or listen to anyone else’s piece, until and unless he is Dan Brown or Paulo Coelho. It will take some persuading before you can read your work to anyone, even to your cat, but you must do it, in order to figure out the issues with your writing. For now, you just need listeners, not their feedbacks.

Discount 10 percent words

This is something worth doing. I know you will feel the pang as everyone of us does, but always remember your goal is not to create a piece full of sentences, but to create a beautiful work of art with only required number of sentences. Do not fall in love with sentences; fall in love with your overall piece, and attempt to make the whole piece look good.

Hear what they say

A good writer takes cues from the real life, and listening to others will give you many. Overhear others, if you need to, because you can get the best insight only by becoming invisible observer.

Observe how they talk

Not only the contents of their talks are important, but the style used to convey the message is equally important. This will tell you how to say it.

Read, read and study

To make your writing shine like the writing of masters, you will need to study the works of great writers. Do not limit yourself to reading great writers, read bad ones as well. To be able to differentiate chaff from wheat, you need to know what is what.

17 Sep 09 5 Simple Proofreading Tips

Editors say, “Get a fresh eye on it,” and by this they mean do not proofread your document on your own because the mistake that eluded you the first time will do it again the next time you will proofread the document. Actually this is true, and that is why you are asked to get the proofreading done by someone else, even the great writers do that. But, there are times when you simply cannot do it because either the project has to be sent in a jiffy, or you are typing a mail or sending a memo. Through this blog-post, I am sharing 5 valuable tips that will help you find errors in your document.

Tip 1: Take a Break

Once you are done with writing the article or memo, close the document and divert your attention from it for 10-15 minutes. Do some other work and do not think about the document. This will free up your mind, and next time when you will proofread the document, you will not be primed with the content, which will help you see the errors.

Tip 2: Read it out loud

Yes, this helps. By reading your document out loud, you are not only employing your eyes, but you are employing your ears and voice as well in proofreading, which matters a lot. Sometime things that look good, doesn’t sound good.

Tip 3: Read it Backward

This is another valuable insight that will help you in proofreading. If you cannot find errors while reading your document from start to finish, try reversing the process.  Reading the document backward will give you a virtual fresh pair of eyes.

Tip 4: Look for the obvious

There are certain words, certain phrases or certain grammar or punctuation mistake you tend make more often than other mistakes. Make a note of those mistakes and focus on finding such mistakes.

Tip 5: Use Search feature

Using the search feature of your word processor can also be a good way to find out common spelling errors. Replace it with correct ones, and for this you may use replace feature.
